77: (Army’s Magnificence – படைமாட்சி)
[Though the verses in the previous chapter of making wealth were seemingly general in nature to be applicable to everyone, given that the entire canto is focused on the “state” or “nation” as a whole, it may very well be construed that the entire earlier chapter talked about the need to make wealth for the prosperity of a state The following chapter talks about the glory and magnificence of the army of the state, which is possible only when the state is prosperous in the first place. Hence the order of this chapter after the need to make wealth]

உறுப்பமைந்து ஊறஞ்சா வெல்படை வேந்தன்
வெறுக்கையுள் எல்லாம் தலை.
(குறள் 761: படைமாட்சி அதிகாரம்)
உறுப்பு அமைந்து – நாட்டைக் காக்கின்ற எல்லா உறுப்புகளும் (முப்படைத் திறமும்) அமைந்து
ஊறு அஞ்சா – உட்பகை, வெளிப்பகையால் விளைகின்ற இடையூறுகளை
வெல்படை – வெல்லுகின்ற படையினை (நிலம், நீர், வான் வழிப் படைகள்)
வேந்தன் – அரசுக்கு, ஆட்சி தலைமைக்கு
வெறுக்கையுள் எல்லாம் – எல்லாச் செல்வங்களுள்ளும்
தலை – தலைமையாவது.
பேரரசுகள் ஆண்டுகொண்டிருந்த முடியாட்சி நாட்களில், ரத, கஜ, துரக, பதாதிகள் எனப்படும், தேர், யானை, குதிரை மற்றும் காலாட்படைகளே, படைகளின் பெரும் உறுப்புகளாகக் கொள்ளப்பட்டன. உலகம் அவ்வாட்சி முறைகளிலிருந்து மாறிய பிறகு, முப்படைகள் என்று கூறப்படும், நில, நீர், வான் வழிப் படைகளே படைகளின் உறுப்பாகக் கொள்ளப்படுகின்றன. இக்குறள் கூறும் பொருளாவது:
நாட்டைக் காக்கின்ற எல்லா உறுப்புகளுமாகிய, முப்படைத் திறமும் அமைந்து, உட்பகை, மற்றும் வெளிப்பகைகளால் விளகின்ற இடையூறுகளை வெல்லுகின்ற படையினை (நிலம், நீர், வான்வழி உறுப்புகள் அமைந்த) கொண்டிருப்பதே ஓர் ஆட்சியின் தலைமைக்கு எல்லாச் செல்வங்களுள்ளும் தலைமையானது.
திரிகடுகப் பாடலொன்று, அர்ப்பணிப்பு உணர்வினைக் கொண்ட படையினை ஒரு நாட்டின் முக்கிய உறுப்புகளுள் ஒன்றாகச் சொல்கிறது. அப்பாடல்:
பத்திமை சான்ற படையும், பலர் தொகினும்
எத் திசையும் அஞ்சா எயில்-அரணும், வைத்து அமைந்த
எண்ணின் உலவா இரு நிதியும், – இம் மூன்றும்
மண்ஆளும் வேந்தர்க்கு உறுப்பு
Transliteration:
uRuppamaindhu URanjA velpaDai vEndhan
veRukkaiyuL ellAm thalai
uRupp(u) amaindhu – Having all limbs of an army (Army, Navy and Airforce)
UR(u) anjA – not fearing any obstacles created by internal and external enemies
velpaDai – army that’s victorious
vEndhan – the ruler
veRukkaiyuL ellAm – among all the wealth posessions ( of a ruler )
thalai – is the primary one.
During the times of older monarchy’s a ruler’s army would be made up, foot soliders, charioteers, warriors on elephants and the horses. After the world has changed to modernity, the armies have been classified as armies of land, naval and airforce.
The verse says, there is no better wealth for a ruler other than a loyal army that’s made up of winning over the enemies from within and external and the menance created by them.
“There is no better wealth for a ruler than all wings, unfearful,
of an army to conquer meanace of enemies that come at will”
