தார்தாங்கிச் செல்வது தானை தலைவந்த
போர்தாங்கும் தன்மை அறிந்து.
(குறள் 767: படைமாட்சி அதிகாரம்)
தார்தாங்கிச் – முறையாக பகைவரின் வியூகத்தைத் (படைவகுப்பு) எதிர்கொள்ளுமாறு அமைத்துச்
செல்வது தானை – செல்வதே ஒரு நல்ல படையாகும்
தலைவந்த – தம்மை தாக்கப் பகைவரால் வியூகம் அமைக்கப்பட்டு எதிர்வரும் படையினர்
போர் தாங்கும் – புரியும் போரை எதிர்த்து நிற்கக்கூடிய
தன்மை அறிந்து – வழிமுறைகளுக்கு ஏற்ப, அவர்கள் அமைக்கக்கூடிய படைவகுப்பறிந்து
ஒரு படையானது பகைவர் அமைக்கும் படைவகுப்புகளை உணர்ந்து, அவர்கள் அமைக்கும் வியூகங்களையும் அறிந்து, அவ்வியூகத்தை எதிர்க்கொள்ளும் வகையிலே தம் அணியினரின் வகுப்புகளையும், வியூகங்களையும் அமைத்து பகையை எதிர்கொள்ளவேண்டும் என்கிறது இக்குறள். செயலாக்கத்தைவிட சிந்தனையாக்கத்தை முதலாக வைத்துச் சொல்லும் குறள்.
“தார்” என்னும் சொல் படை வகுப்பைக்குறிப்பதாகும். பரிமேலழகர் உரை படைவகுப்பை வியூகம் என்று சொல்லி, அதன் வகைகளை வடநூலார் சொல்லிய வண்ணம் குறித்துள்ளார். பண்டைய போர் முறைகளில், படைகள் நேர் நின்று பொருதியதால், காலாட்படை, தேர்ப்படை, குதிரைப்படை, யானைப்படை போன்றவற்றில் தம் வலிமை, எதிரிகளின் வலிமை இவற்றை அறிந்து, தம் படை எதிரிகளின் தாக்குதலில் சிதறாவண்ணம் வியூகத்தை அமைப்பது வழக்கம். மஹாபாரதப் போரிலே பல வியூகங்கள், குறிப்பாக சக்ரவியூகம், பத்மவியூகம் இவற்றைப் பற்றி குறிப்பிடப்படுவதைக் காணாலாம்.
Transliteration:
tArtAngich chelvadhu tAnai talaivanda
pOrtAngum tanmai aRindu
tAr tAngich – To face the strategic placement of enemies battalion (face to face war)
chelvadhu tAnai – when an army organizes itself, it is a capable one.
Talaivanda – As the enemies with their strategic placements come to attack
pOrtAngum – to withstand their strategic rank and file placement of their battalion
tanmai aRindu – knowing their thinking and placement and ways of attacking
A battalion must be aware of the strategic placement of enemies military array (viyUkam) and place their army accordingly to face and tackle the enemie’s onslaught, says this verse. This verse, though was written for the wars of monarchs of ancient times, where the warring enemies would be in a battle fieled face to face, implies the strategic placement of army’s divisions so that it is impenetrable by enemies.
“tAr” means, such strategic placement of the military battalions, known as “viyUkam” in Sanskrit. The ancient armies had soliders on foot, chariots, horses, and elephants as separate divisions and it was important to place them appropriately in a duel with an enemy army so that the army would, without disintegrating can fight the opposite side and also can cause maximum distruction to enemie’s army. MahabhartA speaks of many such viyUkas such as Pama viyUkam (lotus structure), chakra viyUkam (wheel and spokes) etc.
