அழிவி னவைநீக்கி ஆறுய்த்து அழிவின்கண்
அல்லல் உழப்பதாம் நட்பு.
(குறள் 787: நட்பு அதிகாரம்)
அழிவின் அவை நீக்கி – கெடச்செய்யும் தீவழிகளில் செல்லும்போது செல்லாது நீங்கச்செய்து
ஆறு உய்த்து – நன்னெறிகளைக் கொண்ட வழிகளில் செலுத்தி
அழிவின்கண் – விதிவயத்தாலோ, வேறு காரணங்களாலோ கேடு வந்துற்றபோது
அல்லல் – அதனால் வரும் துன்பங்களையும்
உழப்பதாம் – உடன் வருந்தி அதிலும் பங்கு கொள்வதாம்
நட்பு – ஒரு நல்ல நட்பினுடைய அடையாளம்
மீண்டுமொரு நட்பின் இலக்கணம் சொல்லும் குறள். தன்னுடைய நட்புக்குரியவர் கெடுதல் செய்யும் தீய வழிகளில் செல்லும்போது, செல்லாமல். அவற்றிலிருந்து அவரை நீங்கச் செய்து, அவரை நல்ல வழிகளில் செலுத்தி, விதிவயத்தாலோ, அல்லது பிற காரணங்களாலோ, அவருக்கு கேடு வந்துற்றபோதும், அவரை நீங்காது, அவருடனே இருந்து, உடன் வருந்தி, அன்னாரது துன்பங்களிலும் பங்கு கொள்வதே உண்மையான நட்பாகும்.
சடாயு உயிரீ நீத்த படலத்தில், அவனுடைய நட்பின் வலிமையைக் கூறுமிடத்து, “ஒரு பகல் பழகினார் உயிரை ஈவரால்” என்று கம்பர் கூறுவார். “சொல்லின் அரில் அகற்றும் கேள்வியார் நட்பும்” என்று சொற்களிலும் குற்றங்களை அகற்றும் நட்பை திரிகடுகம் சொல்லுகிறது. அறத்தைப் பற்றி கூறும் திரிகடும், “அன்பு ஓடி நாள் நாளும் நட்டார்ப் பெருக்கலும்”, அதாவது நட்பு செய்தவரைப் பெருகச் செய்தலும் முதன்மையான அறமென்கிறது.
Transliteration:
Azhivi navainIkki ARuiththu azivinkaN
Allal uzappadAm naTpu
Azhivin avai nIkki – When a friend is about follow the unethical path or deeds, prevent and steer them away
AR(u) uiththu – lead them in ethical ways and deeds
azivinkaN – if for any unforeseen reasons or driven by fate
Allal – they face difficulties and suffering because of such reasons or fate
uzappadAm – facing them along side with friends and be a support to the friend during those tough times
naTpu – is true friendship.
When a friend is about follow the unethical path or deeds, preventing and steering them away from such, leading them in ethical ways and deeds and if for any unforeseen reasons or driven by fate, they face difficulties and suffering, facing the same along side with friend and be a support to the friend during those tough times is true friendship, says this verse as definition of friendship.
Kambar cites JatAyu’s friendship as one such friendship, by saying, “even if has known for one day, a friend would even forsake their life”. TirikaDugam says, a true friend would even remove blemishes in his friends’ words and they would make their friends grow.

Shaing and enduring the suffering of turbulence and troubles, is true friendship”
