உள்ளற்க உள்ளம் சிறுகுவ கொள்ளற்க
அல்லற்கண் ஆற்றறுப்பார் நட்பு.

உள்ளற்க – நினையாதீர்
உள்ளம் – ஊக்கத்தைக்
சிறுகுவ – குறைக்கும் செயல்களை
கொள்ளற்க – கொள்ளாதீர்
அல்லற்கண் – துன்பத்தே
ஆற்று அறுப்பார் – எதிர்கொள்ளும், நீக்கும் வழிகளைச் சொல்லாது, கைவிடுகின்றவர்
நட்பு – நட்பினை
எவ்வாறு ஊக்கத்தினைக் குறைத்தோ, கெடுத்தோ செய்கின்ற செயல்களை ஒருவர் நினைத்துப் பார்க்கக்கூடாதோ, அதேபோன்று, துன்பம் வந்தபோது விலக்குகின்ற அல்லது எதிர்கொள்ளும் வழிகளைச் சொல்லி ஆற்றுப்படுத்தாது கைவிடுகின்றவர் நட்பையும் கைகொள்ளாது கைவிடுதல் வேண்டும் என்கிறது இக்குறள்.
இரண்டு கருத்துக்களுமே அவற்றின் வழிநின்று செய்யவேண்டுவனவற்றையே சொன்னாலும், எப்படி ஊக்கமும் நட்பும் ஒன்றுக்கொன்று தொடர்புடையவாயின என்பது வள்ளுவருக்கே வெளிச்சம். பொருத்தமில்லா உவமையாகவே தோன்றுகிறது. ஊக்கத்தைக் குறைத்து ஆக்கத்தைக் கெடுக்கும் செயல்களைச் செய்தால் துன்பம் வருவது இயற்கை. ஒருவேள அவ்வாறு செய்யாதீர் என்று எச்சரித்துவிட்டு, பிறகு அவ்வாறு செய்து துன்பம் வரும்போது உதவாத நட்பை கைகழுவுவதுபற்றிச் சொன்னாரோ?
Transliteration:
uLLRka uLLam siRuguva koLLaRka
allaRkaN ARRaruppAr naTpu
uLLRka – never think of (deeds)
uLLam – enthusiasm
siRuguva – diminishing
koLLaRka – never have
allaRkaN – when grief sets in
ARR(u) aruppAr – that which does not help to remove or at least face with courage
naTpu – such friendship
Like how a person should not even think of deeds that diminish ones fervor, one should not have friendship that does not help to remove or at least face with tact, when grief sets in, says this verse.
Though both thoughts says what one must adopt in his life, it is difficult to see how they are related in a metaphorical context to each other. Perhaps only vaLLuvar knows. Perhaps the connection is an implied one here! It is true that deeds done to diminish a person’s fervor are to be avoided and when done despite, may bring grief; when such grief sets in, the friendship that does not help to resolve needs to be cut off.
“Fervor diminishing acts must, one avoid even if strife
So must be the friendship, that does not help in grief”
