Transliteration:
Maruvuga mAsaRRAr kENmaione RIththum
Oruvuga oppilAr naTpu
Maruvuga – Be in the company of
mAsaRRAr – blemishless persons’
kENmai – friendship
oneRIththum – even giving some price or something in exchange
Oruvuga – let go or abstain from
oppilAr – people of lacking in virtue and virulent
naTpu – their friendship
Friendship must be made only with blemishless and virtuous persons. Lacking in virtue and virulent must be avoided or shunned giving whatever price it takes to get rid of such friendships. Some times, by the design of ill fate, such bad friendships are made and they must be rid off by giving whatever it takes or else, they will set life only in ruin.
A verse in the canto of virtues, from the chapter “Gratitude” has already spoken about this through this verse “maRavaRga mAsaRRAr kENmai thuravArka thunbaththuL thuppAyAr nAtpu” (Don’t forget the friendship of the pure and blemishless. Never forsake timely helpers)
In the fourth verse of this chapter vaLLuvar stressed that good friendships must be made by giving whatever price. Here, he stresses the same saying bad friendships must be rid off by giving whatever price it demands. It is interesting to observe that setting price for everything was in vogue, even during vaLLuvar’s times.
“Have only friendship with persons that are blemishless
By giving whatever, be rid of virulent and characterless”
