81: (Evil Friendship – தீநட்பு)

பருகுவார் போலினும் பண்பிலார் கேண்மை
பெருகலிற் குன்றல் இனிது.
(குறள் 811: தீநட்பு அதிகாரம்)
பருகுவார் போலினும் – இன்பத்தைப் பருகுதல், நுகர்தல் போன்று இனிதாகத் தோன்றினும்
பண்பிலார் – நல்ல பண்புகள் இல்லாதவரோடு கூடிய
கேண்மை – நட்பானது
பெருகலிற் – வளர்வதை விட
குன்றல் – குறைந்து, தேய்வதே (முடிவில் அற்றுப்போவதுமே)
இனிது – ஒருவருக்கு இனிமை பயக்கக்கூடியதான்.
நல்ல பண்புகளே இல்லாத ஒருவருடைய நட்பானது நுகர்வதற்கு இனிய ஒரு பொருள் போன்று தோன்றினாலும், அந்நட்புறவில் இருப்பவருக்கு அந்நட்பு வளருவதை விட அது குறைந்து, தேய்ந்து, மறைந்து போவதே நன்றும் இனிமையுமாம், என்கிறது இக்குறள். நற்பண்புகள் இல்லாதவரோடு, அல்லது கெட்டபண்புகள் குடிபுகுந்தவரிடம் நட்பானது தோன்றிவிட்டாலும், அவை கேட்டினையே தருவன. அதனால் அவை குறைய வேண்டும்.
Transliteration:
paruguvAr pOlinum paNbilAr kENmai
perugaliR kunRal inidu
paruguvAr pOlinum – though the enjoyment may feel sweet and pleasurable
paNbilAr – persons devoid of good virtues
kENmai – friendship
perugaliR – instead of growing in strength
kunRal – diminish and fade
inidu – is good
Though the enjoyment though an evil friendship may be tastier, it is better to see that decay and eventually vanish than grow. If the friendship is developed with an evil person that will only gradually land a person in trouble. So it is better to see it in decay trend, says this verse.
“It is better to see the friendship with evil
in decay, even if it delights as a sweet pill”
