ஏதிலார் ஆரத் தமர்பசிப்பர் பேதை
பெருஞ்செல்வம் உற்றக் கடை.
(குறள் 837: பேதைமை அதிகாரம்)
ஏதிலார் – அயலார், மற்றோர்
ஆரத் – பசியார (பயனுற)
தமர் – தம்முடையவர், உற்றோர்
பசிப்பர் – பசித்திருப்பர்
பேதை – அறிவிலார், சிற்றறிவுடையோர்
பெருஞ்செல்வம் – பெரிய செல்வத்தினை
உற்றக் கடை – பெற்றிடுவார்களாயின்
அறிவிலாப் பேதையர், சிற்றறிவாளர்கள் பெரும் செல்வத்தைப் பெற நேர்ந்தால், அதனால் அவர்களுக்கு உற்றார் என்றும் தமர் என்றும் கொள்வார்க்குப் பயன் ஒன்றும் இல்லை; அவர்கள் பசித்திருப்பர். மாறாக மற்றவர்களே அவர்கள் செல்வத்தை பயன்கொள்வர். இக்கருத்தைப் பழமொழி நானூற்றுப் பாடலொன்று இவ்வாறு கூறுகிறது.
விரும்பி அடைந்தார்க்கும் சுற்றத் தவர்க்கும்
வருந்தும் பசிகளையார் வம்பர்க்(கு) உதவல்
இரும்பணைவில் வென்ற புருவத்தாய்! ‘ஆற்றக்
கரும்பனை அன்ன துடைத்து’.
இப்பாடலின் பொருள்: பெரிய மூங்கில் வில்லினையும் தன் வடிவினாலே வெற்றி கொண்ட அழகிய புருவத்தை உடையவனே! தம்மை விரும்பி வந்து சேர்ந்திருப்பவர்களுக்கும், தம்முடைய சுற்றத்தினர்களுக்கும் அவர்களை வருத்துகின்ற பசித்துன்பத்தினைப் போக்காதவர்கள், யாரோ புதியவர்களுக்கு உதவுதலானது, தன்னை மிகவும் பாதுகாத்து வளர்த்தார்க்கு உதவாது, நெடுங்காலஞ் சென்று, பின்வரும் புதியவர்களுக்கு உதவுகின்ற இயல்பினையுடைய கரிய பனைபோலும் தன்மையை உடையதாகும். அது அறிவீனர்களின் செயல்ன்றோ? இப்பாடலில் ஒருவனை விளித்துச் சொல்லுவதிலே ஒரு நையாண்டி இருப்பதை உணரலாம். அழகிய புருவம் உடையவனாய், புற அழகனாய் இருப்பவனே, ஆனால் அறிவிலாப் பேதையாக இருக்கிறாயே என்று பொருள்படுவதை உணர்க.

Perunjselvam uRRak kaDai
EdilAr – others
Arath – will be get their hunger quenched
Thamar – own people,
pasippar – will be hungry
pEdai – if fools
Perunjselvam – big wealth
uRRakkaDai – obtain
Fools, if they get any wealth beyond what their capacity to put it to any good use, only others that don’t deserve, will enjoy and quench their desires in unworthy pursuits. Their own, will hardly benefit out of that wealth, says this verse. Their sense of priority and, who they should take care are skewed towards unworthy others only, not the well deserving their own people.
A pazhamozhi nAnURu poem says addressing a man with beautiful eyebrows, those that don’t feed and quench the hunger of people that come hoping they would be fed, but feed new others, are like a dark palm tree that is grown by someone, but yields benefits to others. In this poem, the addressing itself sarcastically underlines, that a person addressed is perhaps handsome, but a fool.
“Only others will benefit, not kin and kith
if the fools are blessed with large wealth “
