அறிவிலான் நெஞ்சுவந்து ஈதல் பிறிதியாதும்
இல்லை பெறுவான் தவம்.
(குறள் 842: புல்லறிவாண்மை அதிகாரம்)
அறிவிலான் – சிற்றறிவோன் ஒருவன்
நெஞ்சு உவந்து – தம் உள்ளத்தில் மகிழ்வுடன்
ஈதல் – மற்றொருவரிடத்தில் வள்ளன்மையோடு ஈவது என்பது
பிறிதி யாதும் இல்லை – ஈதலின் நன்மை பற்றியோ, இம்மைக்கும் மறுமைக்கும் உறு பயனை நோக்கியோ அல்ல
பெறுவான் தவம் – அவ்வள்ளன்மையை ஏற்கின்றவனுடைய நல்வினைப் பயனே அதற்குக் காரணம்.
அறிவில்லாதவன் ஒருவருக்கு ஒன்று ஈதல் என்பது, அது நல்வினையென்பதாலோ, அன்றி, அவனுடைய அறிவினைக்கொண்டு, இம்மை, மற்றும் மறுமையில் நன்மையை வேண்டி அல்லது. ஏனெனில் அவ்வளவுக்குக் கூட நன்மை, தீமைகளை ஆராயும் அறிவு இல்லாதோன் அவன். அவ்வாறாயின், அதன் காரணம் என்னவெனில், அவனுடைய வள்ளன்மையை கொள்கின்றவனுடைய நல்வினைப் பயனே ஆகும் என்கிறார் வள்ளுவர். அறிவின்மையின் இழிமையை இடித்து, ஏளனமாகக் கூறும் குறள் இது.
Transliteration:
aRivilAn nenjuvandhu Idal piRidiyAdhum
illai peRuvAn thavam
aRivilAn – an ignorant person
nenju uvandhu – with a happiness in heart
Idal – to be benevolent to other
piRidi yAdhum illai – has no particular reason (certainly not because of the goodness of such an act)
peRuvAn thavam – it is just the good fortune and the benefit of the recipient’s good acts.
The act of benevolence with happiness, from an ignorant is not out of his awareness of good that it yields in his current and subsequent births or that he knows the merits of such an act of kindness. It is simply because of the merits of the recipient’s good penance of earlier and the current births – says vaLLuvar. The hint of sarcasm is again abundantly seen in this verse. An ignorant cannot do any perceptive, discerning good, knowing that it is the right thing to do; hence it must definitely be the good fortune of the recipient.
