இகல்காணான் ஆக்கம் வருங்கால் அதனை
மிகல்காணும் கேடு தரற்கு.

இகல் காணான் – பகையை எண்ணமாட்டான் (ஒருவனும்)
ஆக்கம் வருங்கால் – செல்வம் தமக்கு வருமானால்
அதனை – ஆனால் அதையே
மிகல் காணும் – வெற்றியாகவும், பெருமையாகவும் காணுவான்
கேடு தரற்கு – தமக்குத் தாமே கேட்டினை வருவித்துக்கொள்ள எண்ணுபவன்,
பொதுவாக தமக்குச் செல்வம் வருமானால், ஆதாயம் இருக்குமிடத்தில் ஒருவரும் பகையைப் பாராட்டமாட்டார்கள்; இது உலக இயற்கை. ஆனால் தமக்கு கேட்டை வருவித்துக்கொள்பவனோ, அதையே வெற்றியாகவும், பெருமையாகவும் எண்ணி அதைத் தேடிக்கொள்வான் என்கிறது இக்குறள். தமக்குத்தாமே கேட்டை வருவித்துக்கொள்ளும் ஒருவனுக்கே, பகையை வெற்றியாகவும், பெருமையாகவும் எண்ணக்கூடிய பேதைமை இருக்கும் என்பதைச் சுட்டுகிறது இக்குறள். இதனால் பகையையில் நிலைப்பவர்கள் கேடுறுவது உறுதி என்பதும் சொல்லப்படுகிறது.
Transliteration:
igalkANAn Akkam varungkAl adanai
migalkANum kEDu tharaRku
igal kANAn – a person will not think of enemity with another
Akkam varungkAl – if he gets wealth from the same
Adanai – But that (enemity)
migal kANum – is considered as pride and success for someone
kEDu tharaRku – who invites destruction for self
If there is a financial or other form of gain from some place or person, none in good senses will have enemity there, though may be for selfish reasons. This is the nature and the way of the world. But one who is a self-destructing pursuit, may seek it as a pride or victory, says this verse. Because only fooloshishness of such kind fosters enemity; also implied is the fact that the people in the state of enemity in their mind and deed are bound to face destruction because of their foolishness or self-bloatd arrogance.
“Where there is gain of anykind, none seeks enemity
Only self-destructiing fools seek that with enormity”
