88: (Assessing Enemies – பகைத்திறந்தெரிதல்)
[This chapter is about knowing the state and nature of the enemy and taking appropriate course of action. Making enemies, making friends with previous enemy as needed, ignoring enemies as required, and be completely removed from enemies in some cases are all different ways of dealing enemies. This requires savvy analysis and assessment of enemies. The chapter, also discusses when to be rid of enemies and what disgrace it is, not to be rid in some cases. பகைஎன்னும் பண்பி லதனை ஒருவன்
நகையேயும் வேண்டற்பாற் றன்று.
(குறள் 871: பகைத்திறந்தெரிதல் அதிகாரம்)
பகை என்னும் – பகையென்னும் பிறரை வெறுப்பதாகிய
பண்பிலதனை – பண்பற்ற குணத்தினை
ஒருவன் – ஒருவன்
நகையேயும் – வேடிக்கைக்காகக் கூட
வேண்டற்பாற்று அன்று – விரும்பக்கூடாது
பிறரை வெறுப்பதும், அழிக்கத்தூண்டுவதுமான, பகையென்பது பண்பிற்கொவ்வாதது; அதனால் வெறும் விளையாட்டுக்குக்கூட ஒருவர் அதை விரும்பக்கூடாது என்கிறது இக்குறள். பகை கொள்ளுதல் என்றுமே தீமையே பயப்பதால், அது பண்பற்றதாகிறது. அதை விளையாட்டுக்காகவே கொண்டாது, அது வினையாகி விடக்கூடுமாதலால், அதை வேடிக்கைக்காகக் கூட கொள்ளக்கூடாது என்று சொல்வதன் மூலம், பகையென்பதன் தீத்திறத்தை தெளிவாகக் காட்டும் குறள்.
Transliteration:
Pagaiyennu paNibi ladanai oruvan
nagaiyEyum vENDaRpARRu anRu
Pagaiyennu – Enmity that which
paNibiladanai – is not a virtue to have (evil)
oruvan – a person
nagaiyEyum – even for playful cheer
vENDaRpARRu anRu – shall not desire
That which detests and nudges to destroy is, enmity, and it is definitely not a desirable virtue. Hence, even for playful cheer, a person shall not indulge in enmity, says this verse. Enmity leads to evil and destruction; hence it is evil by nature. Enmity even playfully, can yield unintended, bad results; hence it must be avoided. This verse succinctly underlines the evil nature of enmity
“Desire not even for a playful cheer
The evil virtue that enmity is, never!”
