Transliteration:
thERinum thERA viDinum azhivinkaN
thERAn pagAan viDal
thERinum – even if a person had known his enemies strength
thERAviDinum – or not know how strong the enemy was,
azhivinkaN – when a person faces distress
thERAn – the person shall not attempt to get close
pagAan – or distance himself further
viDal – and leave the enmity as it is.
More than interpreting this verse as the verse stands, it is important to understand what it hints at indirectly. Whether or not a person (ruler) knew or understood his enemy’s strength, in the strategic interest, it is imperative, that he does not act only when facing a distress and maintain the status quo – is what alluded by the verse.
Why so? An enemy would be wary of a person who tries to come close, only during the time of distress and would see it as an act of selfish need. Similarly, if a person is seen further moving away, then it would be construed as weakness and would pave way for the enemy to charge further taking advantage. It is is prudent that nothing is done, making the enemy guessing as to what would come forth.
“Whether he is close or not with an enemy during normal times,
Prudent it is for a person, not to do so during times of distress”
