வரைவிலா மாணிழையார் மென்தோள் புரையிலாப்
பூரியர்கள் ஆழும் அளறு.
(குறள் 919: வரைவில் மகளிர் அதிகாரம்)
வரைவு இலா – ஒழுக்க நெறிமுறைகள் ஏதுமில்லாத
மாண் இழையார்– மதிப்புக்குரியனவற்றை செய்யாத விலைமாதர்
மென்தோள் – மென்மையான தோள்களே
புரை இலாப் – பெருமை இல்லாத
பூரியர்கள் – இழிமக்கள்
ஆழும் – அழுந்தக்கூடிய
அளறு – சேறு நிறைந்த சகதிக் குழியாகும்
ஒழுக்க நெறிமுறைகள் இல்லாத, மதிப்புக்குரியனவற்றை செய்யாத விலைமாதரின் மென் தோள்களில் முயங்கிக் கிடப்பதே பெருமை இல்லாத இழிமக்கள் அழுந்தக்கூடிய சகதிக் குழியாகும். வரைவில் மகளிரைச் சேர்பவர்கள் அழுக்கிலே அமிழ்ந்து உழல்பவர்கள். இழிமக்கள் என்று கூறியது பெருமை இல்லாதவர்களையே கூறுவதால், இதில் குடிப்பிறப்பு மற்று சாதி இவற்றைக் அடையாளக் குறிகளாக்காது ஒருவரது செயல்களால் சேரும் பெருமை என்பதையே குறிக்கும் விதமாக, “புரை இலா” என்கிறார் வள்ளுவர்.
Transliteration:
varaivilA mANizhaiyAr menthOL puraiyilAp
pUriyarkaL Azhum aLaRu
varaivu ilA – Without any chaste discipline
mAN izhaiyAr – and not doing anything respectable
menthOL – women of slender arms
puraiy ilAp – have no glory
pUriyarkaL – lowly men (of no good conduct)
Azhum – immerse in that
aLaRu – mire, dirty muck.
To be in the embrace of unchaste and ill reputed harlots is like being in the dirty muck or mire for men of no glory and lowly conduct, says this verse. Since glory and lowly conduct are emphasized, it is evident that noble birth and caste are not placed in the fore. Glory for men comes from their flawless conduct and acts. Hence the use of word, “pural ilA”.
