கள்ளுண்ணாப் போழ்திற் களித்தானைக் காணுங்கால்
உள்ளான்கொல் உண்டதன் சோர்வு.
(குறள் 930: கள்ளுண்ணாமை அதிகாரம்)
கள்ளுண்ணாப் போழ்திற் – கள்ளுண்பவர் தாம் கள்ளுண்ணா நேரத்து
களித்தானைக் காணுங்கால் – அதை உண்டு களித்திருப்போரைக் கண்டால்
உள்ளான்கொல் – உணர்ந்து கொள்ளமாட்டரோ?
உண்டதன் – கள்ளுண்டதனால் உறுகின்ற
சோர்வு – கேடு? (அவர் மன, மொழி, செயல்களால் தம் வயத்தில் இல்லாமலிருத்தலை)
அதிகாரத்தின் நிறைவிலே ஒரு அங்கலாய்ப்பு தொனிக்கிறது. தாமாக உணராதவர், பிறர் சொன்னாலும் கேளாதவர், தாம் உண்ணாதபோதாவது, கள்ளுண்ணும் பிறர், கள்ளுண்டு மயங்கியிருப்பதையும், அதனால வரும் கேட்டினையும், கண்ணுற்று அதனால் திருந்தமாட்டாரா? அவ்வாறு காணும் கேடு என்னவாயிருக்கும்? கள்ளுண்போர் மனம், மொழி, செயல்களால் தன்வயமிழந்து இருத்தலையே சோர்வு என்கிறார் வள்ளுவர்.
Transliteration:
kaLLuNNAp pOzhdiR kaLIththAnaik kANungkAl
uLLAnkol uNDadhn sOrvu
kaLLuNNAp pOzhdiR – when a person is sober without drinking toddy
kaLIththAnaik kANungkAl – when he sees the others who drink toddy and act without control
uLLAnkol – won’t he think and understand
uNDadhn – that of toddy drinking
sOrvu – ill-effects of being not in control in mind, words and deeds.
There is a tone of exhaustion and desperation in the final verse of this chapter. At least when he is not drinking and is sober, a person who does not realize on his own, and does not listen to others advising, won’t he think and try to come out of addiction seeing how other toddy-drinkers act? – asks vaLLuvar! He is certain to see the ill-effects of toddy drinking in others, of not being in control of their senses, words and deeds, which are impossible while being indulgent.

of that, when he is sober and see others in indulgent acts”
