ஒழுக்கமும் வாய்மையும் நாணும்இம் மூன்றும்
இழுக்கார் குடிப்பிறந் தார்.
(குறள் 952: குடிமை அதிகாரம்)
ஒழுக்கமும் – சீரான பழக்க வழங்கங்களோடு கூடிய நல்லொழுக்கம்
வாய்மையும் – எப்போதும் எங்கும் உண்மையே பேசுகின்ற குணம்
நாணும் – பழி பாவங்களுக்கு வெட்குகிற குணம்
இம் மூன்றும் – ஆகிய மேலே சொல்லப்பட்ட மூன்று குணங்களிலிருந்தும்
இழுக்கார் – சற்றும் வழுவார், நீங்கார்
குடிப்பிறந்தார் – நல்ல குலத்திலே பிறந்தவர்கள்
மனம், வாக்கு, காயம் என்று சொல்லக்கூடிய மூன்றாலும் நிலைபெறக்கூடிய பழி பாவங்களுக்கு அஞ்சுகிற வெட்கமுடைமை, சொல்லில் உண்மை உடைமை, செயல்களில் நல்ல பழக்கங்களைக் கொண்டு ஒழுகுகிற தன்மை இவற்றிலிருந்து, நற்குடிப் பிறந்தோர் சற்றும் வழுவார் என்கிறார் வள்ளுவர்.
நாலடியார்ப் பாடலொன்று, பெருந்தன்மை, மென்மை, கடைப்பிடித்தல் என்னும் இவை மூன்றும் உயர்வு பொருந்திய குடியிற் பிறந்தவர்க்கல்லது மிக்க செல்வம் உண்டான காலத்தும் பிறர்க்கு உண்டாகமாட்டா என்று கூறுகிறது. அப்பாடல்:
சான்றாண்மை சாயல் ஒழுக்கம் இவைமூன்றும்
வான்றோய் குடிப்பிறந்தார்க் கல்லது – வான்றோயும்
மைதவழ் வெற்ப! படாஅ பெருஞ்செல்வம்
எய்தியக் கண்ணும் பிறர்க்கு.
Transliteration:
Ozukkamum vAimaiyum nANumim mUnRum
izhukkAr kuDippiRan dAr
Ozukkamum – virtuous character and ways in deeds
vAimaiyum – truthfulness in mind and words
nANum – modest and fearful of blame of sin
immUnRum – these three
izhukkAr – will never slip from
kuDippiRandAr – people of noble birth
Peoplle of noble birth shall not deviate from the path of three foremost of virtues: virtuous character and ways; being truthful in thought and deeds; and being modest, fearful of blame of sin and shame., says this verse. These enlisted three are tied to the mind, speech and the body respectively and hence refer to the wholesome demeanor of a person.
A nAlaDiyAr verse says, though a person attains great wealth, unless he is of noble birth, it is not in the nature to have nobility, truthfulness in speech and practice of virtues.
Noble-born shall never deviate nor slip from the three virtues:
Self-discipline in deeds, truthful in words, and modesty in ways
