குன்றின் அனையாரும் குன்றுவர் குன்றுவ
குன்றி அனைய செயின்.
(குறள் 965: மானம் அதிகாரம்)
குன்றின் அனையாரும் – மலையைப் போன்று உயர்ந்தோரும்
குன்றுவர் – தம் நிலையினின்று தாழ்வர்
குன்றுவ – இழிவான செயல்களை
குன்றி அனைய – ஒரு குன்றி மணியளவுக்கே (சிறிய அளவைக் குறிக்க)
செயின் – செய்தாலும்
இழிசெயல்களை சிறிதளவே செய்தாலும், மலைபோன்று தம் நிலையில் உயர்ந்தோர், தம்நிலையிலிருந்து வீழ்ந்துபடுவர். குன்றிமணி என்பது அளவில் சிறியது; அதோடு ஒப்பின் குன்று மிகப்பெரியது. வீழ்ச்சியின் அளவை உயர்த்திக் காட்டவே இந்த ஒப்புமை.
உயரே செல்ல செல்ல, வீழ்ச்சியின் வீச்சம் மிகுதியானது. குன்றனைய குடிப்பெருமை மிக்கோரும் குன்றுவர் குலப்பெருமைக் கெடும்படியாகன செயல்களை ஒருமுறையே, அதுவும் சிறிதளவே செய்தாலும் என்பதே இக்குறள் உணர்த்துவது.
Transliteration:
kunRin anaiyArum kunRuvar kunRuva
kunRi anaiya seyin
kunRin anaiyArum – Even if high and mighty like a hillock
kunRuvar – will diminish in stature
kunRuva – that which is not blameful
kunRi anaiya – even a miniscule of a morsel amount
seyin – if done.
Even if only a morsel sized blameful is done, a mountainous stature of noble birth shall fall and fail. The “kuNRi maNi” is a small seed and in comparison to a hillock, it is insignificant. The verse highlights the extent of fall.
Higher the status, stature, greater the fall and the affect, hence the integrity to safeguard the nobility is even more important. Else, the honor, dignity will be hit hard.
“Hill like stature and dignity will fail and fall for noble,
even if a morsel of blame befalls on mighty and tall”
