மருந்தோமற் றூன்ஓம்பும் வாழ்க்கை பெருந்தகைமை

மருந்தோ – சாவாமைக்கு மருந்தாகக் கொள்ளப்படுமோ?
மற்று – அல்லாது
ஊன் ஓம்பும் – உடம்பை வளர்க்கும்
வாழ்க்கை – வாழ்வானது
பெருந்தகைமை – மானமும் மதிப்பும் உடைத்தான வாழ்க்கை
பீடழிய – அதன் பெருமையானது அழிவுறும் படி
வந்த இடத்து.– ஒன்று ஒருவருக்கு நிகழும்போது.
மதிப்பும் மாகனமும் உடைய பெருமைதரும் வாழ்வானது அழிவுறும்படி ஒருவர்க்கு நேரும்போது, வெறும் ஊன்பொதியாம் இவ்வுடலை வளர்க்கும் வாழ்வையா, சாவாமைக்கு மருந்தாம் அமுதாகக் கொள்வது என்று ஒரு நையாண்டியும், கோபமும் கலந்து வினவுகிறார் வள்ளுவர்!
மானமே மாகனம் என்றில்லாமல், ஏது செய்தாவது உடம்பை வளர்ப்பதை, அதுவே சாவாமைக்கு மருந்தென்று கொள்வது பெருமைபட வாழ்ந்ததைப் பொருளில்லாமல் ஆக்குவது.
நாலடியாரின் இவ்வரிகள் இக்குறளின் கருத்தையொட்டி இருப்பதைக் காணலாம்.
“மான அருங்கலம் நீக்கி இரவென்னும் ஈன விளிவினால் வாழ்வேன்மன்”
“இழித்தக்க செய்தொருவன் ஆர வுணலின்”
அறநெறிச்சாரப் பாடலொன்றும் இக்கருத்தை ஒட்டியது.
“தனக்குத் தகவல்ல செய்தாங்கோ ராற்றால்
உணற்கு விரும்பும் குடரை – வனப்பற
ஆம்பற்றாள் வாடலே போல அகத்தடக்கித்
தேம்பத்தாம் கொள்வ தறிவு”
Transliteration:
marundOmaR RunOmbum vAzhkkai peruntagaimai
pIDazhiya vanda iDaththu
marundO – would it be medicine for immortality?
maRRu – otherwise
Un Ombum – that which grows the flesh of the body
vAzhkkai – such life
peruntagaimai – life of honor and dignity
pIDazhiya – for its glory to be diminished or destroyed
vanda iDaththu – when something happens to that effect
If the pride and honor in life for anyone is destroyed, would efforts of preserving the body of flesh sustained by eating, be construed as nectar for immortality? – asks vaLLuvar in a tone of saracasm and righteous rage.
Dignity is honor; Losing that and just preserving this perishable body makes the life lived in such dignity meaningless.
Begging to live, losing dignity is said to be lowly in nAlaDiyAr.
