பண்பிலான் பெற்ற பெருஞ்செல்வம் நன்பால்
கலந்தீமை யால்திரிந் தற்று.
(குறள் 1000: பண்புடைமை அதிகாரம்)
பண்பிலான் பெற்ற – பிறரோடு இயைந்து பண்போடு பழகும் குணமில்லார் பெற்ற
பெருஞ்செல்வம் – பரம்பரையாக வந்த மிகுந்த செல்வம்போல் (தம் உழைப்பால் உருவாகாமல்)
நன்பால் – நல்ல பசுக்கள் தரும் இனிமையான பால்
கலந் தீமையால் – அஃதுள்ள பாத்திரத்தின் கேட்டால் (சில உலோகங்களுக்கு அக்குணமுண்டு)
திரிந்தற்று – திரிந்து பயனற்று போவது போல, பயனற்றதாகி விடும்
பிறரோடு இயைந்து பண்போடு பழகும் குணமில்லாரிடத்தில் உள்ள பெருஞ் செல்வம் பயனற்றது. அது நல்ல ஆவின் பாலை அது கெட்டுபோகும் படியான ஒரு பாத்திரத்தில் இட்டால், அது திரிந்து கெட்டு பயனற்றதாகி விடும்.
எப்படி அது பாலின் குற்றமில்லையோ, செல்வத்தின் குற்றமும் இல்லை. இட்டவரின் குற்றமே. தகுந்த பாத்திரமா என்று பாராது ஒன்றை அதில் சேர்ப்பதும் குற்றமே. எப்படி பாலை அத்தகைய பாத்திரத்தில் இட்டவர் (அறிந்தோ, அறியாமலோ) செய்வது தவறோ, செல்வத்தை பண்பிலாரிடம் விட்டுச் செல்வது, விட்டுச் சென்றவர்களின் தவறேயாம். அவர்கள் வளர்ப்பிலும் குற்றமிருக்கலாம். பண்பிலாரைப் பாத்திரத்துக்கும், பெற்ற செல்வம் என்றதால் பண்பிலார் தாமாக ஈட்டாததையும், அச்செல்வத்தை விட்டுச் சென்றவரையும் ஊகித்து உணரமுடிகிறது.
இக்குறள் சொல்லும் மையக் கருத்து, பண்பிலாரிடல் இருக்கும் வளங்கள் பயனற்றவையே என்று. பண்புடைமையைப் வளரும்போதே ஊட்டி வளர்க்க வேண்டியதையும் உய்த்துணரச் செய்கிறது.
Transliteration:
paNbilAn peRRa perunjchelvam nanpAl
kalantImai yAlthirin daRRu
paNbilAn – Those that are not congenial or courteous,
peRRa perunjchelvam – the enormous wealth they get (left by family) is like
nanpAl – Excellent milk
kalan tImaiyAl – because of the vessel it is kept in
thirindaRRu – how it goes bad and useless
The wealth inherited by those that are not congenial or courteous to others, is like pure fresh milk, left in a vessel that will spoil the milk (certain metals have such property), will be useless.
Like how it is not milks’ fault, the wealth also has no fault of its own. Those who left the milk in the bad vessel are to be blamed. Likewise here the blame is mostly on those who leave that inheritance, though knowingly or unknowingly done. The blame is on how they upbring their offsprings and protégés. Sometimes, though virtuous and courteous themselves, some bring up their offsprings like lose canons in the name of affection, which could lead to such spoilt characters.
The verse mainly focuses on how the wealth of uncurteous is useless and hints at how disciplined the upbringing has to be.
“The enormous wealth left for the non-congenial and non-courteous
is like pure fresh milk left in a vessel where it goes bad, of no use”
