நாண்அகத் தில்லார் இயக்கம் மரப்பாவை
நாணால் உயிர்மருட்டி அற்று.
(குறள் 1020: நாணுடைமை அதிகாரம்)
நாண் அகத்தில்லார் – பழிக்கு வெட்குதலை தம் உள்ளத்தில் இல்லாதார்
இயக்கம் – உயிருடையவர்களைப்போல் இயங்குவதென்பது
மரப்பாவை – மரத்தினால் செய்த பொம்மை
நாணால் – கயிற்றால் ஆட்டுவிக்கப்பட்டு
உயிர் மருட்டி அற்று – உயிர்ப்புள்ளதாக மயக்குவது போலாம்.
தம் உள்ளத்தில் பழிக்கு வெட்கும் நாணுடைமை இல்லாதவர்கள் உயிருள்ளவர்களைப்போல் இயங்குவது, மரத்தினால் செய்த பொம்மை, கயிற்றால் ஆட்டுவிக்கப்பட்டு, உயிர்ப்புள்ளதாக மயக்குவது போலாம். பழிக்கஞ்சி நாணாரை உயிரற்ற் அஃறிணைப் பொருளெனவே உருவகித்து இவ்வதிகாரத்தை நிறைவு செய்கிறார் வள்ளுவர்.
Transliteration:
nANagat tillAr iyakkam marappAvai
nANAl uyirmaruTTi aRRu
nAN agattillAr – Devoid of sense of shame in their hearts
iyakkam – their active state
marappAvai – a wooden puppet
nANAl – with a string
uyir maruTTi aRRu – pretends as if truly lively
The apparent activities of people without the sense of shame for the blameful and sinful deeds in their hearts, is akin to the activities of a wooden puppet, a make belief act by the string attached to it. In either case they are deemed to be truly lifeless and declared so by vaLLuvar in this concluding verse of the chapter.
“Activities of people without the sense of shame in their mind
is like wodden puppet shown to be active by its strings’ bind”
