குடிசெய்வார்க் கில்லை பருவம் மடிசெய்து
மானங் கருதக் கெடும்.
(குறள் 1028: குடி செயல்வகை அதிகாரம்)
குடி செய்வார்க்கு – தம் குடியை உயர்த்து செயல்களில் முனைவோர்க்கு
இல்லை பருவம் – உற்ற காலம் இதுவென்று ஒன்றுமில்லை (நாளும் கோளும் தேவையில்லை)
மடி செய்து – சோம்பி, சோர்வுகொண்டு தாமதம் செய்வதும்
மானங் கருதக் – வீண் பெருமை கொள்வது ஆகிய இரண்டாலும்
கெடும் – அக்குடி மேன்மையுறச் செய்யும் செயல்கள் வீணாகும், குடியும் கெடும்
தம் குடியை மேன்மையுறச் செய்யும் செயல்களில் முனைப்புடன் ஈடுபடுவோர்க்கு, இதுதான் உற்ற காலமென்று ஒன்றுமில்லை. நாளும் கோளும் நலிந்தோர்க்கில்லை என்ற சொலவடை நலிவுற்றவர்களை உயர்த்துபவர்களுக்கும் பொருந்துமில்லையா? அவ்வாறு உயர்த்தாமல், சோர்வுடன் தாமதம் செய்வதும், வீண்பெருமையால், தம் தகுதிக்கு இது ஏற்ற செயலல்ல என்று கருதாமல், தமக்குரிய செயல்கள் எதுவாயினும் அவற்றைத் தயங்காமல் செய்யாவிட்டால், அதனால் குடி உயராது, வீணாய் கெடும் என்பதே இக்குறள் சொல்லும் கருத்து.
Transliteration:
kuDiseivArk killai paruvam maDiseidhu
mAnang karudhak keDum
kuDiseivArkku – for those who strive to elevate their clan
illai paruvam – there is nothing like appropriate time (it is always good time)
maDi seidhu – being lethargic and procrastinating
mAnang karudhak – and vainglorious about doing certain things as below dignity
keDum – both their clan and the deeds they do will ruin
For those who strive to elevate their clan to glory, there is nothing like appropriate time or inappropriate time to do pertinent deeds. Being lethargic and procrastinating, and being vainglorious are certain to ruin their efforts as well as their clan, says this verse. There is nothing below dignity while doing things pertinent to uplift the clan nor there is an auspicious day, is what is implied here.
“There is no special time for those that stirve to uplift their clan
Also, procrastination and vainglory will ruin both effort and clan”
