இடுக்கண்கால் கொன்றிட வீழும் அடுத்தூன்றும்
நல்லாள் இலாத குடி.
(குறள் 1030: குடி செயல்வகை அதிகாரம்)
இடுக்கண் – துன்பமானது
கால் கொன்றிட – காலை ஒடிக்கும்போது (அவர்கள் வாழ்வாதாரத்தை முறிக்கும்போது)
வீழும் – வீழ்ந்துபடும் (குலமே வீழ்ந்துபடும்)
அடுத்தூன்றும் – அடுத்து ஊன்றித் தாங்கிக்கொள்ள (அத்துன்பத்திலிருந்து மீட்டு தாங்கிக்கொள்ள)
நல்லாள் இலாத குடி – நல்லதொரு ஆள் இல்லாத குடி அல்லது குலம்.
தம் குலமானது நடக்கவொண்ணாது (முன்னேற முடியாது) அதனுடைய காலானது (உருவகமே), அதாவது வாழ்வாதாரங்களானது முறிபடும்போது, ஊன்றுகோலெனத் தாங்கிப்பிடிக்க ஒருவர் இல்லையெனில் அக்குலமே வீழ்ந்துபடும் என்று கூறி, குடியைத்தாங்கி, வழி நடத்தை, உயர்த்தி பிடிக்க உறுதியும், நடத்தும் திறமையும் உள்ள ஒருவர் வேண்டும் என்று உணர்த்தி இவ்வதிகாரத்தை நிறைவு செய்கிறார் வள்ளுவர்.
Transliteration:
iDukkaNkAl konRiDa vIzhum aDuththUnRum
nallAL ilAda kuDi
iDukkaN – when sufferings
kAl konRiDa – break the leg of the clan (metaphorically their very base)
vIzhum – the clan will fall in its standing
aDuththUnRum – a shoulder to hold on to
nallAL ilAda kuDi – a clan without such a uplifting, supporting good person
When the clan has its leg broken with the sufferings, metaphorically alluded to be the basis of their very living, if there is no supporting staff or crutch, again alluded to the supporting ways of the leader, then the clan will fall in its standing. Saying thus, and stressing that a strong, supporting leader is needed for a clan to keep its standing and go forward, vaLLuvar completes this chapter.
