உழவினார் கைம்மடங்கின் இல்லை விழைவதூஉம்
விட்டேம்என் பார்க்கும் நிலை.
(குறள் 1036: உழவு அதிகாரம்)
உழவினார் – உழவுத் தொழிலைச் செய்யும் உழவர் பெருமக்கள்
கைம்மடங்கின் – தம்முடைய கையினால் ஏர்பிடித்து செய்யும் உழவினை கைவிட்டால்
இல்லை – இல்லையாம்.
விழைவதூஉம் – யாவரும் விரும்பும் உணவுக்கும் ஆசைப்படுதலையும்
விட்டேம் என்பார்க்கும் – விட்டு விட்டோம் என்னும் துறந்தார்க்கும்
நிலை – அவ்வாறு துறந்த அறத்தில் நிலையாயிருப்பது (இல்லை என்ற சொல்லோடு சேருவது)
உழவுத் தொழிலைச் செய்யும் உழவர் பெருமக்கள் தம்முடைய கையினால் ஏர்பிடித்துச் செய்யும் உழவுத் தொழிலைக் கைவிடுவாராயின், மற்றவற்றுக்கு இல்லையெனினும், உணவுக்கு ஆசைப்படுதாலாகிய விட முடியாத ஒன்றையும் விட்டு விட்டேன் என்று துறந்தார்க்கும், அவ்வாறு துறந்த அறத்தில் நிலைத்திருப்பது இயலாத நிலையாம்.
Transliteration:
uzhavinAr kaimaDangin illai vizhivadUum
viTTEmen bArkkum nilai
uzhavinAr – Farmers that produce food
kaimaDangin – if they don’t plough and abandon their profession
illai – is not there
vizhivadUum – even desiring food that everbody likes
viTTEm enbArkkum – those that claim they have given up even that (food)
nilai – to sustain that state ( joins with the word “illai”)
If the farming community that cultivates the land for agricultural produce abandon their profession, even those that claim they have abandoned the desire for food – that which others in general cannot give up, even if other desires are given up – can not sustain and stay in that state.
Once again through this verse, vaLLuvar emphasizes the importance of farmers across the world and imply even the ascetic cannot stay in their state if farmers give up their profession.
“Even for those who give up all else, impossible it is to be in their ascetic stay
If the farming community abandons its agricultural profession for others dismay”
