நல்குரவு என்னும் இடும்பையுள் பல்குரைத்
துன்பங்கள் சென்று படும்.
(குறள் 1045: நல்குரவு அதிகாரம்
நல்குரவு என்னும் – வறுமை எனப்படும்
இடும்பையுள் – துன்பத்துக்குள்
பல்குரைத் துன்பங்கள் – பல துன்பங்களும்
சென்று படும்.- விரைந்து விளையும்
ஏற்கனவே ஏழையாயிருப்பதே ஒருவருக்கு பெருத்த துன்பம்; ஏழ்மையினும் துன்பம் ஒருவருக்கு இல்லை. அந்த ஏழ்மையில் இருப்பவரைத்தான் மேலும் மேலும் பல துன்பங்கள் சூழ்ந்துகொள்ளும் என்பதே இக்குறள் சொல்வது. சென்று படும் என்பது, விரைவாக சென்று ஏழ்மையில் இருப்பவரை மீண்டும் மீண்டும் துன்பத்தில் ஆழ்த்துவதைச் சொல்லுகிறது.
இக்குறள் உணர்த்த வருங்கருத்து, வறுமை துன்பத்தை மேன்மேலும் தருவதை உணர்த்தமட்டுமா என்று சிந்தித்தால், இல்லை என்பது புரியும். அத்தகைய நல்குரவில் சிக்காமலிருக்க முன்பு பல அதிகாரங்களில் சொன்ன, ஊக்கம், அறச்செயல்கள் இவற்றில் ஈடுபட வேண்டியதைப் பற்றி படிப்போரை சிந்திக்க வைக்கும் குறள் என்றே கொள்ளவேண்டும். ஒருவகையில் ஒன்றைப் பற்றி பயம் ஏற்படும் போதும்தான் அதில் சிக்காமலிருக்கும் வழிகளை சிந்திப்பார்கள் என்னும் மனோதத்துவத்தை உணர்ந்து, மீண்டும் ஒருமுறை அறிவுறுத்தாமல், அறிவுறுத்துகிறார் வள்ளுவர்.
Transliteration:
Nalguravu ennum iDumbaiyuL palgurath
thunbangaL senRu pADum
Nalguravu ennum – The painful poverty
iDumbaiyuL – which is a great misery
palgurath thunbangaL – comes with many other miseries all packed in it
senRu pADum – that too quickly one after another.
Being in poverty itself is misery; such misery is engulfed by other forms of miseries fairly quickly, is what is said in this verse.
Is it simply an announcement to the readers that more and more misery will be for people that are already in misery? It does not look like that. In many prior chapters, vaLLuvar time and again has repeated the much desired and needed virtuous conduct as well industry in a person to not subject himself in any misery. Sometimes, instead of appearing to be pontificating again and again, just saying the height of undesirable happenings, one might be induced to think about why so and how to avoid such miserable happenings. Perhaps vaLLuvar uses that kind of psychological approach to get across to people that otherwise would not think and act.
