106: (Asking Alms – இரவு)
[Though in general terms, the word “iravu” means begging others, seeking alms for well being of a larger cause is as good as not begging; it is indeed considered a virtuous act. This chapter is about such act in noble terms]

இரக்க இரத்தக்கார்க் காணின் கரப்பின்
அவர்பழி தம்பழி அன்று.
(குறள் 1051: இரவு அதிகாரம்)
இரக்க – இரப்பீர்
இரத்தக்கார்க் காணின் – யாரிடம் இரக்கலாமோ, அவரைக் கண்டால்
கரப்பின் – அவர் ஈயாது மறைத்தால்
அவர் பழி – அது அவர் கொள்ளும் பழியாகும்
தம் பழி அன்று – ஈ என இரத்தலினால் தமக்கு வரும் பழியன்று
இரத்தல் எப்போதுமே இழிவானது அன்று. ஈவதால், ஈயும் ஒருவருக்குப் உயர்வு கிடைக்குமாயின், அவரிடம் இரத்தல் என்பது, அவருக்கே உதவுவது போலாம். இதுவும் ஒருவகை ஈகையே. ஒருவரின் ஈகை இருவர்க்கு உதவும். எனவே யார் இரக்கத் தக்கவரோ, அவரிடம் இரத்தல் என்பது தவறே இல்லை; இழிமையும் இல்லை.
அவ்வாறு இரக்கத்தக்கார் (அதாவது ஈயும் அளவுக்கு இயலும் ஒருவர்) ஒருவரைக் கண்டு அவரிடம் இரக்கையில், அவர் ஈயாதிருப்பின் பழி அவர்க்கே யாம். இரக்கும் ஒருவருக்கு இல்லை.
Transliteration:
Irakka iraththakkArk kANin karappin
Avarpazhi thampazhi anRu
Irakka – seek alms
iraththakkArk kANin – if a person worth of being sought, is seen
karappin – if the person hides what he has, not willing to help
Avar pazhi – it is his blame
Tham pazhi anRu – there is no shame of blame on the person that seeks
Seeking alms is not demeaning always. If by giving, the person who is benevolent gets glory, it is worth seeking alms from such person. In fact it is indirectly helping that person to get his glory. Even this is some sort of benevolence on the part of seeker. Hence it is not shameful to seek alms from who is capable enough to help out.
If the person from whom alms are sought, is not forthcoming to help, he has the shame of blame; not the person who sought the help in the first place.

or denies, the blame is entirely his, not yours
