இகழ்ந்தெள்ளாது ஈவாரைக் காணின் மகிழ்ந்துள்ளம்
உள்ளுள் உவப்பது உடைத்து.
(குறள் 1057: இரவு அதிகாரம்)
இகழ்ந்து – ஒருவரை அவமதிக்காமல்
எள்ளாது – அவரை இழிவாகப் பேசாமல்
ஈவாரைக் காணின் – வள்ளன்மையோடிருக்கும் ஈவாரைக் கண்டால்
மகிழ்ந்துள்ளம் – அதனால் உள்ளம் மகிழ்ந்து
உள்ளுள் உவப்பது உடைத்து – இரப்போர் உளத்துக்குள்ளேயே உவகை உடையவராய் இருப்பர்.
தம்மிடம் இரப்போரை இழிவாக எண்ணாமல், அவமதித்துப் பேசாமல் வள்ளன்மையோடு, ஈந்து உதவுவாரைக் கண்டால், இரப்போர் தம்முடைய அகம் மகிழ்ந்து, உவகை கொள்வராய் இருப்பர் என்கிறது இக்குறள்.
இனியவை நாற்பது, இக்கருத்தையொட்டியே, “எளியர் இவர் என்றிகழ்ந்து உரையாராகி ஒளிபட வாழ்தல் இனிது” என்கிறது. “மகிழ்ந்துள்ளம்”, “உள்ளம் உவப்பது உடைத்து” என்பதும் ஒன்றையே கூறுவனபோல் தோன்றினாலும், ஒருவரது நல்ல இயல்பைக் காணும்போது உள்ளம் மகிழ்வது எல்லோருக்கும் இயல்பே. அதையும் தாண்டி, அதனால் உறுபயனை ஐம்புலன்களும் அனுபவித்தாலும், அவற்றையொட்டிய உள்ளத்தில் ஏற்படும் நிறைவே, உவகையே முதன்மையானது என்பதால், அதை வலியிறுத்துவதாகக் கொள்ளலாம்,
Transliteration:
igazhndeLLAdu IvAraik kANin magizhnduLLam
uLLuL uvappadu uDaiththu
igazhndu – Not insulting one who comes seeking alms
eLLAdu – not making fun of their state
IvAraik kANin – if such a person that bestows help to those that seek, is seen
magizhnduLLam – in their hearts they (who seek alms) will feel happy
uLLuL uvappadu uDaiththu – and rejoice within themselves
Seeing a person that bestows without insulting, or speaking reproachingly, those who go seeking alms shall feel happy and be absolutely blissful in their mind.
There is subtle difference shown in this verse in feeling happy and being satisfied in mind. It is like eating a sumptuous meal. Though one feels satiated in their tastes and happy, when the hunger is quenched, the satisfaction in mind is immeasurable. vaLLuvar underlines that in this verse.
Iniyavai nARpadu alludes to the content of this verse by saying, “sweet it is to live gloriously without insulting otherse as inferior”.
“Seeing a person that bestows helping without any insult or reproach,
those that seek, feel happy, be satiated in their mind to so approach”
