ஈர்ங்கை விதிரார் கயவர் கொடிறுடைக்கும்
கூன்கையர் அல்லா தவர்க்கு.
(குறள் 1077: கயமை அதிகாரம்)
ஈர்ங்கை – உண்டுலரும் ஈரக்கை கொண்டும்
விதிரார் – உதறிவிடமாட்டார் (எங்கு ஏதேனும் இரந்தார்க்குப் போய்விடுமோ என்று)
கயவர் – கீழோர்
கொடிறு உடைக்கும் – அவருடைய கன்னக் கதுப்புகளை உடைக்குமாறு
கூன் கையர் – முட்டியை மடக்கிக் கொள்ளும் கைகளை
அல்லாதவர்க்கு – கொள்ளாதவர் தவிர
கயவரைக் கஞ்சரோடு ஒப்பிடும் குறள். கைகளை மடக்கி முட்டியால் கன்னக் கதுப்புகளை உடைக்கும் வன்முறையாளார்க்கு அன்றி, கீழோர் தாங்கள் உண்டு கழுவிய ஈரக்கையைக் கூட இரப்போர்முன் உதறிவிடமாட்டார்கள், எங்கு உணவின் மணம் நீர்வழியாக இரப்போர்க்கு சென்றடையுமோவென்று.
இதே கருத்தையே, அறநெறிச்சாரப்பாடல் இவ்வாறு கூறுகிறது
இட்டக் கடைத்தரார் ஈண்டும் பலிமரீஇப்
பட்ட வழங்காத பான்மையார்–நட்ட
சுரிகையாற் கானும் சுலாக்கோலாற் கானும்
சொரிவதாம் ஆபோற் சுரந்து.
அதாவது, தம்பால் உள்ள பொருள்களை, நட்பினர்களுக்கும் கொடாமலும், பிச்சையேற்று வாழ்வோருக்கும் ஈயாமலும் வாழும் கஞ்சராம் கீழோர் உடைவாளால் தம்மைத் தாக்க வருபவனுக்கும், தடியைச் சுழற்றிக்கொண்டு அடிக்க வருபவனுக்கும், கறப்பவனுக்குத் தனது பாலைச் சுரந்து கொடுத்தல்போல அப் பொருளை நிறைய வழங்குதல் உண்டாகும். தடியெடுப்பவனுக்கும் தண்டல்காரனுக்கும் அஞ்சுகிற கீழோர், மற்றபடி, எச்சல் கையால் காக்கைகூட ஓட்டமாட்டார்கள்.
Transliteration:
Irngai vidirAr kayavar kODiRuDaikkum
kUnkaiyar allA davarkku
Irngai – Even the wet hand after eating and washing
vidirAr – they wont shake (fearing what if the water from the hand goes to someone)
kayavar – such lowly souls
kODiRu uDaikkum – jaw bones breaking
kUn kaiyar – those who raise their fist to do that
allAdavarkku – but for them
This verse compares misers to base. But for the violent people that break the jaw bones with their fist, the base would not even shake their washed hands out, perhaps thinking that the water drops carrying the aroma of the food eaten would accidentally reach the beggers.
The fact that base would understand only mean ways, not nicer ways has been said again in many works; one such example is cited above from “aRaneRi chAram”. Only a stick or fist would be able to get anything from such lowly.
“But for the force of violence with stick or fist raised
Base would not even shake their, hands washed”
