எற்றிற் குரியர் கயவரொன்று உற்றக்கால்
விற்றற்கு உரியர் விரைந்து.
(குறள் 1080: கயமை அதிகாரம்)
எற்றிற்குரியர் – வேறு எத்தொழிலுக்குத்தான் ஏற்றவர் (எதற்கும் இல்லை என்பது உள்ளுரை)
கயவர்? – கயவராம் கீழோர் ?
ஒன்று உற்றக்கால் – தமக்கு ஏலாத ஒன்று நேரும் போது
விற்றற்கு உரியர் – அதற்காக தம்மையே அடிமையாக விலை கூறி விற்கவும் செய்வர்
விரைந்து – அதி விரைவில் (அதாவது தம்மைப் பற்றிய குட்டு வெளிப்படும் முன்னர்)
தமக்கு ஒவ்வாத ஒன்று, குறிப்பாக துன்பம் என்று உற்றக்கால், அதிலிருந்து தப்பிக்க தம்மையும் விற்றுக்கொள்ள, அதிலும் விரைவாக, அடுத்தவர் தம்மை இத்துணைக் கீழோன் என்று அடையாளம் கண்டு கொள்ளுமுன்பாக, முனைவர். அதைத்தவிர வேறு எந்த தொழிலுக்கு அத்தகையோர் ஏற்றவராக இருப்பர்? இவ்வதிகாரத்தையும், திருக்குறளின் மிகப்பெரிய அங்கமான பொருட்பாலையும், வள்ளுவர், இக்குறளுடன் நிறைவு செய்கிறார்
Transliteration:
eRRiR kuriyar kayavarஒnRu uRRakkAl
viRRaRku uriyar viraindu
eRRiRkuriyar – For which other work are the capable? (for none is implied)
kayavar – the base?
onRu uRRakkAl – when something calamitous , disastrous happens to them
viRRaRku uriyar – they would not even hasten to sell themselves as slaves
viraindu – that too quickly before others recognize and expose the true colors.
When something that is disastrous happens, perhaps due to own making, to escape that, the base would not even hesitate to sell themselves as slaves, that too befores identify their baseness. Whatelse are they capable of? , asks vaLLuvar, in this last verse of the final chapter and the canto that deals with the aspects of governance, wealth, and citizenship etc,.
Self-serving base would even sell themselves as slaves that too expediently,
When calamitous sets in! What else are they ever capable to do beneficially?
