உண்டார்கண் அல்லது அடுநறாக் காமம்போல்
கண்டார் மகிழ்செய்தல் இன்று.
(குறள் 1090: தகையணங்குறுத்தல் அதிகாரம்)
உண்டார்கண் அல்லது – அதை பருகினவர்க்கே அன்றி வேறு எவ்வகையிலும் இன்பம் தராத
அடுநறாக் – காய்ச்சிய கள்
காமம்போல் – காமத்திற்கு ஏதுவாகிய காதற்பெண்ணைக் குறிப்பதாகும்
கண்டார் – பார்க்கும் காதலற்கு பார்த்த அளவிலேயே
மகிழ்செய்தல் – மகிழ்வைத் தருவது
இன்று – இல்லை,
காய்ச்சிப் பதப்படுத்தப் பட்ட கள்ளானது, அதை அருந்திய மட்டுமே மகிழ்ச்சியைத் தரும்! ஆனால் காமத்திற்கு எதுவாகிய காதற்பெண்ணைக் கண்ட அளவிலேயே காதலற்கு மகிழ்வைத் தருவதுபோல வேறில்லை.
கள் அருந்துவோருக்கு அது மகிழ்ச்சியைத்தந்தாலும், அதைப் பார்த்துக்கொண்டிருப்பதால் அவர் மகிழ்வு எய்தமாட்டார். ஆனால் காதல் வயப்பட்டவருக்கு, புலனுகற்சிக்கும் ஏதுவாகிய காதற்பெண்ணைக் காணுந்தொறும் மகிழ்வே!
Transliteration:
uNDArkaN alladu aDunaRAk kAmampOl
kaNDAr magizhseidal inRu
uNDArkaN alladu – But for those who drink it, not giving pleasure in other ways
aDunaRAk – toddy prepared
kAmampOl – The woman that is the reason for fulfilling all my desires
kaNDAr – for the lover that sees his woman of love
magizhseidal – that which gives happiness
inRu – is not ( the toddy does not give that much pleasure)
Well prepared toddy, gives pleasure only when drunk by a person; but the woman of love that is the instrument for all desires of a man in love, is a pleasure even for seeing; there is none which gives pleasure by just sight.
Though toddy is pleasurable to drink for people who relish it, it does not give pleasure to those who see it always; but for love-struck man, whenever he sees his lady of love, it is unbound happiness!
