அறிதோறு அறியாமை கண்டற்றால் காமம்
செறிதோறும் சேயிழை மாட்டு.
(குறள் 1120: புணர்ச்சி மகிழ்தல் அதிகாரம்)
அறிதோறு – புதியவற்றைத் தெரிந்துகொள்ளும் போதெல்லாம்
அறியாமை கண்டற்றால் – நாம் தெரிந்துகொள்ளாதவை எவ்வளவு என்பதறிவது போலத்தான்
காமம் செறிதோறும் – காதலில் கூடும்போதெல்லாம்
சேயிழை மாட்டு – அணிநகை அணங்கிடமும்
அழகு நகைகளை அணிந்த அணங்கினைக் கூடிப் பிரிந்தான், அவ்வாறு பிரிந்து செல்லும்போதெல்லாம், வியந்து நினைவதாக உள்ள குறள். புதியவற்றை அறிந்துகொள்ளும் போதெல்லாம், எவ்வாறு, எவ்வளவு அறியாதவை இருக்கின்றன என்று தெரிந்துகொள்வோமோ, அதேபோல், இவளோடு ஒவ்வொரு முறையும் கூடிப் பிரியும்போதே, எவ்வளவு தெரிந்துகொள்ளாத இன்பங்கள் இருக்கின்றன என்பது தெரிகிறது என்றவன் நினைக்கிறானாம்.
இதில் கூடலென்பது ஒவ்வொரு முறையும் புதிதாகத் தெரிவது, செறிவான காதலுக்கு உறுதி என்பதும் தெளிவாக உணர்த்தப்படுகிறது. தவிரவும் ஒன்றை ஆழமாகத் தெரிந்துகொள்ள முற்படும்போதுதான், நாம் அவ்வொன்றில் அறியாதவையும், நம் அறியாமையும் நமக்கே புரியவரும் என்பதும் உள்ளுரையாகக் கூறப்படுகிறது. காமத்துப்பாலிலும் கற்றல் பற்றிக் கூறுவதால், கலவியேயாயினும் முறையான கல்வியின் அடிப்படையானது என்றும் உணர்த்தப்படுகிறது.
அறிதோறும் அறியாமையைக் காண்பது பற்றிய பழமொழிப்பாடலொன்று:
சொற்றொறும் சோர்வு படுதலால் சோர்வின்றிக்
கற்றொறும் கல்லாதேன் என்று வழியிரங்கி
உற்றொன்று சிந்தித்து உழன்றுஒன்(று) அறியுமேல்
கற்றொறுந்தான் கல்லாத வாறு.
ஓர் இன்பத்தை அடையும் பொழுது அங்ஙனம் அடையாது நின்ற நாளுக்கு வருந்துதல், சோம்பலின்றி அறியாதவனாக மதித்து ஆராயவே இந்த அறிவு தோன்றும். அது தோன்றுமாதலால் மேலும் மேலும் கற்றலான ஊக்கம் பிறக்கும். அதனான் மிகுந்த இன்பம் பெறலாம். சிறந்த பொருள்களை அறியும் அருமை நோக்கியே ஆசிரியர் ‘உற்று ஒன்று சிந்தித்து உழன்று ஒன்று அறியுமேல்‘ என அறிவதன் அருமைக் கூறப்படுகிறது,
திருக்கோவையார் பாடலொன்று மேலும் வெளிச்சமாகவே, கீழ்வருமாறு கூறும்
உணர்ந்தார்க் குணர்வரி யோன்றில்லைச் சிற்றம் பலத்தொருத்தன்
குணந்தான் வெளிப்பட்ட கொவ்வைச்செவ் வாயிக் கொடியிடைதோன்
புணர்ந்தாற் புணருந் தொறும்பெரும் போகம்பின் னும்புதிதாய்
மணந்தாழ் புரிகுழ லாளல்குல் போல வளர்கின்றதே.”
Transliteration:
aRidOrRu aRiyAmai kaNDaRRAl kAmam
seRithORum sEyizhai mATTu
aRidOrRu – When evern learning the new knowledge
aRiyAmai kaNDaRRAl – similar to how we learn how much we don’t know, is
kAmam seRithORum – whenever in close physical union with
sEyizhai mATTu – with the female well-decked with bright jewels
This verse is about a person who wonders after being in close union with his love. Similar to how a person understands how much is not known or how much more there is to learn, when he learns something new, is the close physical union; it is new everytime and there is so much more to explore, with his lady-love bedecked with gleaming jewels.
What is implied is when a person finds that physical union is yet another new experience, everytime, that emboldens the love, beyond the physical one. Also it is implied that only when we dwelve deep into something, he understand that there is more to learn also. Learning is the measure of ignorance. Though a canto on conjugal pleasures, there is a lesson of learning in this; even the physical union is based on formal education is what is implied.
A verse pazhamozi conveys a similar thought, by enjoying the pleasures of learning a person is more enthusiastic to learn more and understands the importance of learning more.
“How we understand how much is not known the more we learn!
So is the conjugal relation with bejeweled maid, more we yearn”
