115: (Slanders/Rumors – அலர் அறிவுறுத்தல்)
[The words alar and ambal imply slander spoken by towns’ people; In this chapter vaLLuvar uses how such speak affects the people in love in general, mostly as an aide to their love; Typically when the man in love acts for the town to know in public about his love, the town would get to know about the relationship between the man and his love.]

அலரெழ ஆருயிர் நிற்கும் அதனைப்
பலரறியார் பாக்கியத் தால்.

அலரெழ – ஊர் பேசும் பழிப்பேச்சு எழுதலால்
ஆருயிர் நிற்கும் – என்னுடைய இனிய உயிர் நிலைத்திருக்கும் (ஏன்?)
அதனைப் – அவ்வுண்மையை
பலரறியார் – ஊரிலுள்ளோர் பலரும் அறிந்திலர்.
பாக்கியத்தால் – அதுவும் கூட என் பேற்றினால்
எனக்கும் என்னுடைய காதலிக்கும் இடையேயான உறவை ஊரார் பழித்துப் பேசுவதும் நல்லதே. எனெனில் இது ஊரில் பலருக்கும் தெரியவந்ததால் எனக்கும் அவளுக்குமான உறவு உறுதிபடுமென்று அறிந்து அதனால் என் இன்னுயிரானது நின்று நிலைபெறும் அல்லவா? இவ்வுண்மையை பலரும் அறியாரென்பதும் என்னுடைய பேறல்லவா?
ஊரானது வம்பு பேசுவதிலும் நன்மையைக் கண்டு, அதனால் தன் காதல் தழைக்குமென்பது தலைமகனின் எண்ணம். அவனுக்கு அந்த உண்மை எங்கே ஊரில் பலருக்கும் தெரிந்து அவ்வாறு வம்பு பேசாமல் இருந்துவிடுவார்களோ என்று உள்ளூர ஓர் பயமும் உண்டு. ஊருக்கே தெரிவதால் காதலானது உறுதிப்பட்டு உருப்பெற்று உயிருறும் அல்லவா? இவ்வாறு அலர் பேசுவது எரியும் தீக்கும் நீரூற்றி அவிப்பது போலன்று; எண்ணையூற்றி வளர்ப்பதுபோலாம்.!
அலர் மற்றும் அம்பல் என்னும் சொற்கள், ஊர்வம்பைக் குறிக்கும் சங்ககால வழக்குச் சொற்கள். சிலர் மட்டுமே அறிந்து புறங்கூறுதல் அலர் என்றும், பலரும் அறிய பழிதூற்றுதல் அம்பல் என்றும் அறியப்பட்டன.
Transliteration:
Alarezha Aruyir niRkum adanaip
palaRaRiyAr bAkkiyat tAl
Alarezha – Since the slander from the towns people is there
Aruyir niRkum – my life will stay firm
Adanaip – the fact that it indeed helps my life to sustain
palaRaRiyAr – many woud not know
bAkkiyattAl – (even that is) because of (my) good fortune
It is good that towns’ people speak slander about the relationship between us; by many knowing this, our relationship will only solidify; and hence my life will sustain, says the man in love. He further says the fact that many do not know that such slanderous speak indeed helps our love and gives hope for further consummation, is itself my good fortune.
Only by many knowing and speaking about the love even as a slander, the respective families would know the seriousness and to safeguard family honor, they would get us united is the hope of the man. In a way, he indirectly wishes that there is slander for his life to sustain as it depends on the furtherance of relationship. If their intent was to pour water to shut the fire, it would work exactly the opposite way, like pouring oil to the fire.
The words “alar” and “ambal” both implied slander by the towns’ people, during Sangam period. The difference is only in the number of people that indulge. “alar” implies a small group of people speak slander and “ambal” implies such speak by many.
“Because of slander of towns people, sustains my life;
Many wouldn’t know it is a fortune to save from strife”
