களித்தொறும் கள்ளுண்டல் வேட்டற்றால் காமம்
வெளிப்படுந் தோறும் இனிது.

களித்தொறும் – மீண்டும் மீண்டும் அருந்தி மகிழ்ந்தாலும்
கள்ளுண்டல் – மது அருந்துதல்
வேட்டற்றால் – வேட்கை தரும் இன்பமாம் (சிலருக்கு? பலருக்கும்?)
காமம் – அதுபோல் காதலைப் பற்றி
வெளிப்படுந்தோறும் – செய்தி பலருக்கும் மேலும் தெரியவரும் போதெல்லாம்
இனிது – காதலர்க்கு அது இன்பமே (ஏனெனில் ஊர் வம்பு காதலை உறுதி செய்கிறதே)
மதுவை அருந்திக் களிக்கும்போதெல்லாம் மீண்டும் மீண்டும் அதை அருந்து விழைவு ஏற்படுமாம் பலருக்கும், அது மீண்டும் மீண்டும் களிக்கத் தூண்டுகிற இன்பமாம். அதேபோல் காதலைப் பற்றி ஊரார்க்கு செய்தி வெளிப்படும் போதெல்லாம், காதலருக்கு அது இன்பமேயாம்! மேலும் மக்கள் இதைப்பற்றி பேசாரோ என்றுகூட தோன்ற இன்பமாம் அது. பழியிலும் பரவசம் அடையச் செய்யும் பாங்கினையுடையது காதலும், காமமும் என்கிறது இக்குறள்.
Transliteration:
kaLiththoRum kaLLuNDal vETTaRRAl kAmam
veLippaDum thORum inidu
kaLiththoRum – though enjoyed again and again
kaLLuNDal – drinking toddy
vETTaRRAl – gives more desire to drink again and again
kAmam – lust or love
veLippaDumthORum – whenever others get to know more and more
inidu – is more pleasurable.
The pleasure of toddy induces more desire to drink it again and again. So is the gossip about the love between a man and his lover; The more it spreads among townspeople, more is the desire of love and the lust that grows and is pleasurable for lovers. Even the blemishful gossip becomes a blissful for lovers.
