தெரிந்துணரா நோக்கிய உண்கண் பரிந்துணராப்
பைதல் உழப்பது எவன்.
(குறள் 1172: கண்விதுப்பழிதல் அதிகாரம்)
தெரிந்து (உ)ணரா – இதன் பின் விளைவுகள் இவையென்று ஆராயந்து உணர்ந்துகொள்ளாது
நோக்கிய – அன்று பார்த்து (காதலனை)
உண் கண் – அவன் அழகை உண்ட கண்கள்
பரிந்து (உ)ணராப் – இந் நிலைமைத் தாம் முதலில் பார்த்ததால்தான் என்று பொறுத்து உணராமல்
பைதல் – துன்பத்தில்
உழப்பது எவன் – வருந்துதல் ஏனாம்?
கண்களில் வருத்தம் தோய்ந்து துன்பத்தில் ஆழ்ந்த தலைவிக்குக் தோழி கூறுவதாக அமைந்த குறள். இதனால் இன்ன விளைவுகளே வரும் என்று உய்த்துணராது, அவன் அழகைக் கண்டு பருகி, காதலில் ஆழ்ந்த உன் கண்கள், இன்று தாம்தானே இதற்கு காரணம் என்ற பரிவோடு, புரிந்து உணராமல், வருந்தி துன்பத்தில் ஆழ்தல் ஏன்?
“எண்ணித் துணிக கருமம் துணிந்தபின் எண்ணுவம் என்ப திழுக்கு” என்ற தம் குறளின் கருத்தை இங்கு ஆராயாமலொன்றைச் செய்துவிட்டு வருந்துகிற கண்களுக்கும் பொருத்துகிறார் வள்ளுவர்.
Transliteration:
therinduNarA nOkkiya uNkaN parinduNarAp
paidal uzappadu evan?
Therindu (u)NarA – Not understanding ahead of time, the repercussions
nOkkiya – glanced
uN kaN – devoured the beauty of (her) lover
parindu (u)NarAp – not realizing the fact that It is because themselves
paidal – in miserable sorrow
uzappadu evan? – why feel sad now?
Looking at maidens’ sorrow filled eyes, her friend says: “not thinking about the repercussions of devouring his beauty and falling in love, these eyes indulged in intense love with your beloved. Now, why would they wallow in misery and feel sad, for his separation, not realizing the fact that it is because of them, the present state is!
It is to be noted that vaLLuvar was consistent in using a thought from an earlier verse, “Ennit tuNiga karumam, thuNindapin, eNNuvam enba dizhukku” and applied for the eyes also, which in fact does not have its own thinking capacity.
“After all your eyes glanced and devoured him, without forethought
And now, why are they miserable in sorrow, not realizing that fact?”
