ஒருதலையான் இன்னாது காமம்காப் போல
இருதலை யானும் இனிது.
(குறள் 1196: தனிப்படர் மிகுதி அதிகாரம்)
ஒருதலையான் – ஒருதலைக் இருந்தால்
இன்னாது காமம் – துன்பமே அக்காதல்
காப்போல – காவடியைப் போல்
இருதலையானும் – இரண்டு தோள்களிலும் சுமந்தால் (ஆண், பெண் இருவருக்கும்) அக்காதல் இருப்பின்
இனிது – அது இனிமையாம்
இது இருபாலருக்குமே பொருந்துவதுதான் எனினும், காதலில் பிரிவின் துயரத்தை வேலை நிமித்தமாகச் செல்லும் ஆண்கள் பொதுவாக, வெகுவாக உணர்வதில்லை என்பதும் ஓரளவுக்கு உண்மையே. ஒருபக்கக் காதலாயிருந்தால் அது துன்பத்தையே காதலிப்பவருக்குத் தரும் என்பது வெள்ளிடை. இதில் கூறப்பட்ட உவமை காவடியைப் போல் இரண்டு பக்கதிலும் (ஆண்,பெண் இருவரும்) சுமந்தாலே அது இனிமை உடைத்தாம்.
பிரிவின் துன்பம் கூட இருவருக்கும் சமமாக இருந்தாலே கூடலில் இரட்டிப்பு இன்பம் என்பதை உணர்த்தும் குறள்.
Transliteration:
orutalaiyAn innAdu kAmamkAp pOla
irutalai yAnum inidu
orutalaiyAn – Being one sided (for both male and female, equally applicable)
innAdu kAmam – love is painful
kAp pOla – like the pole with burden on either side
irutalaiyAnum – if it is on either side equally there
inidu – love is pleasurable
Though it is equally applicable to both genders, the burden of separation is generally not felt as much in males as they go on work (mostly). It is known that if the love is one sided, then it is painful. If it is equally burdening on either side, like burden tied to both sides of a pole carried on either side of the shoulders, then even that burden is pleasurable to both, says this verse.
Even separation, though a burden on either side can be pleasurable when they get together, after the pain of separation.
