பதிமருண்டு பைதல் உழக்கும் மதிமருண்டு
மாலை படர்தரும் போழ்து.
(குறள் 1229: பொழுது கண்டிரங்கல் அதிகாரம்)
பதி மருண்டு – இவ்வூரே மயங்கி
பைதல் உழக்கும் – துன்பத்தில் ஆழும்
மதி மருண்டு – நம்முடைய மதியானது மயங்கி
மாலை – மாலை நேரம்வந்து
படர்தரும் போழ்து – படரும் போது அல்லது பசலை தரும்போது.
இது ஒரு குழப்படியான குறள் என்றே சொல்லலாம். பல உரையாசிரியர்கள் உரையும் மேம்போக்காக, பெரும்பாலும் பரிமேலழகரை ஒட்டியே இருக்கின்றன. “மதி மருண்டு” என்பதை “பதி மருண்டு பைதல் உழக்கும்” என்பதோடு சேர்ப்பதா அல்லது, “ மாலை” என்பதோடு சேர்ப்பதா என்ற குழப்பம் இதற்குக் காரணமாக இருக்கலாம்.
பதி என்பதை ஊர் அல்லது இன்னும் பொதுவாகச் சொன்னால் உலகு என்று கூறலாம். உலகு மயங்கி துன்பத்திலும் உழலுவது எப்போது? அதன் அறிவானது மயங்கும்போது! அது எப்போது என்றால் மாலை நேரம் வந்து மெல்லப் படரும்போது. ஆனால் வள்ளுவர் “படர்தரும்” என்ற சொல்லுவதால், உலகோருக்குப் பசலை தரும் மாலை என்று கொள்வதே பொருந்தும். ஊருக்கே பசலையா என்ற கேள்வி எழலாம். ஊர் என்றது ஊரில் கணவனைப் பிரிந்து வாடும் பெண்டிரைப் பற்றியதாக இருக்கலாம்.
இவ்வூரே மயங்கி துன்பத்தில் ஆழும் அதன் மதி மயங்க பசலை தரும் மாலை வரும்போது என்ற பொருளே கூறமுடியும்.
மதிமருண்டு மாலை என்று படித்தால், மாலையானது அறிவு மயங்கி என்று பொருளாகும், ஆனால் பொருந்தாது.. நிலவு மயங்குகிற மாலை என்று கொண்டால், நிலவும் மயங்கி, மாலையானது ஒளி குன்றும் நேரத்தே என்று பொருளாகும். ஒருவேளை இவ்வாறு இருக்கலாமோ? நிலவு மயங்கி, ஒளி குன்றிய மாலைப் பொழுது வரும்போது, ஊரில் கணவனையும் காதலரையும் பிரிந்து வாடும் பெண்டிர் மயங்கி துன்பத்தில் வாடுவர் !
எவ்வாறாயினும், பொருளை விளங்கிச் சொல்லவியலாத குறள்.
Transliteration:
padimaruNDu paidal uzhakkum madimaruNDu
mAlai paDartarum pOzthu
padi maruNDu – The town is dazed
paidal uzhakkum – and is in pain
madi maruNDu – it mind is also dazed
mAlai – as the evening
paDartarum pOzthu – slowly spreads itself
This verse is rather confusing in terms of its purpose. All commentators have done their commentary primarily based on Parimelazhagars. The placement of the phrase “madi maruNDu” poses a challenge for appropriately interpretation.
The word “padi” means town or even the world. When does the world get confused and suffer in pain? Perhaps when its’ collective intellect is confused. When does that happen? Perhaps when the evening sets in slowly! But vaLLuvar has used the word, “paDar tharum”, which would mean “becoming pale”. Once again, the question as to if the entire town would become pale arises! Perhaps it applies to all those maidens that are painful because of being separated from their respective beloved.
In short, the verse probably conveys this: “when the evening that makes maiden go pale slowly sets in, the entire town (or the maidens of the town that are separated from their respective lovers) is painful.
When we read the phrase as “madi marunDu maLai”, it would mean the evening is confused in its intellect, which makes no sense. If we interpret “madi” as the moon, then, it would mean that the moon fades in it lustre. Perhaps the verse attempts to say this : “When the moon faded, lusterless evening arrives, the maidens of the town, separated from their beloved ones, are painful”.
Whichever way it is read, the verse is difficult to interpret as it is written, though conveys something around the center theme of this chapter.
