மணியில் திகழ்தரு நூல்போல் மடந்தை
அணியில் திகழ்வதொன்று உண்டு.

மணியில் – கோக்கப்பட்ட மணிமாலையில்
திகழ்தரு நூல்போல் – மணிகளுக்கு நடுவே அவற்றை ஒன்றிணைத்த நூல் தெரிவதுபோலே
மடந்தை அணியில் – அணங்கின் பெண்மையெனும் குணநலன்களைக் ஒன்றிணைக்கும் அழகிலும்
திகழ்வதொன்று உண்டு – குறிப்பாகத் தெரிவது உண்டு
என் காதலியின் தோழியே, மணிகளாலாகிய மாலையினைக் கோக்கும் இழையானது, மணிகளுக்கு ஊடே புலனாவது போலே, என் காதலியின் பெண்மையெனும் மாலையைச் அழகு செய்யும் மணிகளாம் அவளின் குணநலன்களைக் கோக்கும் இழையொன்றும் உள்ளது! ஆனால், அது எனக்குப் புலனாகவில்லை. நீ கண்டு சொல்லேன் என்கிறான் காதற்தலைவன். மணிகளால் ஆன அணியொன்றிருந்தால், அவற்றை கோக்கும் இழையொன்று வேண்டும் என்பது ஒரு துணிபு. ஆனால் அதைக் காணமுடியாவிட்டால் ஏற்படும் வியப்பு என்பதையே, குறிப்பாகச் சொல்லும் குறள்.
Transliteration:
maNiyil tigaztaru nUlpOl maDandai
aNiyil tagazvadonRu uNDu
maNiyil – in between the garland of beads strung
tigaztaru nUlpOl – the thread that strings the beads are seen
maDandai aNiyil – In the gardland of her beauty made of feminine attributes
tagazvadonRu uNDu – there is a binding thread hinted
O! Dear friend of my maiden, just as the thread that strings the beads or gems are seen in between the garland made of them, the garland of her beauty, made of the beads of feminine attributes must also be strung by a thread; it is definitely hinted; but I am not able to see it. Can you help me with it? – the man asks his maidens’ friend.
