தொடிநோக்கி மென்தோளும் நோக்கி அடிநோக்கி
அஃதாண் டவள்செய் தது.

தொடி நோக்கி – கழலும் வளை பார்த்தாள்
மென்தோளும் நோக்கி – மெலிந்த தோள்களைப் பார்த்தாள்
அடி நோக்கி – பின் பாதங்களைப் பார்த்தாள்
அஃது ஆண்டு – அக்குறிப்பை ஆங்கு (தானும் உடன் போகுவேன்)
அவள் செய்தது – அவள் செய்தாள்
தலைவன் தன்னைப் பிரிந்தபின் தாமுற்ற பசலையால் தன்னுடைய கைவளைகளை நெகிழ்வதைப் பார்த்தாள்; அதற்குக் காரணமாகி தன்னுடைய தோள்களும் மெலிந்ததைப் பார்த்தாள்; அதன் காரணமாக தன் பாதங்களைப் பார்த்தாள், தானும் அவனைத் தேடிச் செல்லப்போவதைக் குறிப்பால் உணர்த்தும் விதமாக. இக்குறிப்பு தன் தோழிக்கு அவள் செய்தது!
இக்குறளை வேறுவிதமாகப் பொருள் கொள்ளலாம். முதல் இரண்டையும் நோக்கி, நடக்கக்கூடிய பாதத்தை நோக்குவதால், அவ்விரண்டும் நடவாமல் இருக்க நீர் ஆவன செய்யவேண்டும் என்று தலைவனுக்கு உணர்த்தும் விதமாகப் பார்த்ததாகவும் கொள்ளலாம். நடப்பது பாதமே! நடப்பது என்பது நிகழ்வதையும் குறிப்பதால், குறிப்பினை மறைத்துச் செய்தாள் தலைவி.
Transliteration:
toDinOkki mentOLum nOkki aDinOkki
ahdANDavaLsei dadu
toDi nOkki – Looking at the bangles which are ready to come off hands
mentOLum nOkki – also looking at the shoulders which have thinned to enable that
aDi nOkki – she would look at her feet
ahd(u) ANDu – that’s what there
avaL seidadu – she did (as hint)
Because of the lover leaving her pining, he would lose her lustre; she would look at the bangles that are ready to come off; and would also look at her shoulders that have become thin. She looks at the feet implying to her friend that she is not able to bear this separation and is ready to leave in search of him
The verse can be interpreted differently too. Since the feet do the walking (nada in tamizh), the implied action also means “happening”. She could be implying or hinting it to her lover not to leave her by looking at her feet to prevent the first two from happening.
“Bangles are ready to come off and the shoulders have thinned
She looks at the feet; Not to walk away from her is, there hinted”
