Transliteration:

Poippadum onRo punaipUNum kaiyaRiyAp
pEdhai vinaimER koLin

Poippadum – what is undertaken will go futile
onRo – not only that, but
punaipUNum – will be bound in chains
kaiyaRiyAp – when not knowing how to do it
pEdhai – the fool
vinai – task
mERkoLin – undertakes

If a fool undertakes any task it will go futile and be false; not only that, but the fool would put himself in a place to be chained by his own deeds – metaphorically, prisoner of his own deeds or would do something to bring the wrath of rule, to be censured, and arrested. A poem from Pazhamozhi nAnUru, uses an old adage that a frog would show it self to prying snakes or other enemies but making the noise using its mouth, to exemplify this thought.

“Futile will be the deeds undertaken by a fool, not knowing how;
and also, he be bound by chain of his own mistakes somehow”

About ashoksubra

A little of everything is me! Immensely amazed by the concept of Universe and its infinite dimensions. Everything in this perspective seems extremely insignificant spec of a matter! My strength and weakness are one and the same - interest in everything. Focus and Shine is contrary to my belief system because everything shines, un-shines in time. There is nothing like permanent glory, except for the unknown, unseen, yet believed to be smiling at all of us - creator! Sometimes the thought having to go through a whole lot of new learning if I am born again baffles me. At the same time, I feel it may be a new beginning in a clean slate! So, you have figured me out right? I hope not!

  1. Venkatachalam says:

Your rendering is very good. May be you will mine occurring in my book Thirukkural – Translation -Explanation : A Life Skills Coaching Approach is worthy of reading.
    Kural 836
Leave alone he would fail, would also be in chains,
When a fool’s untrained hand takes the reins.

    Explanation:
It is quite sure he will fail, apart from that he will also be arrested when he starts a job, being oblivious to the fact that he doesn’t have the relevant skill, and commits grave mistakes.

Regarding the frog example I am afraid it does not match. Your Tamil version is suburb. In fact I am delighted to read it because if only all the couplets are rewritten in Tamil with such simplicity it would make kural a very attractive one for one and all. I wish you all the best.
