அஃகாமை செல்வத்திற்கு யாதெனின் வெஃகாமை
வேண்டும் பிறன்கைப் பொருள்.
(குறள் 178: வெஃகாமை அதிகாரம்)
Transliteration:
aggAmai selvaththiRku yAdhenin veggAmai
vENDum piRankaip poruL.
aggAmai – Not diminishing in
selvaththiRku – ones’ wealth
yAdhenin – what is it? (how does it happen?)
veggAmai vENDum – when the person does not desire and covet
piRankaip poruL – others wealth
If our wealth should not diminish or become small, we must not covet other’s belonging driven by greed! This is the thought of todays KuraL.
Searching for information, especially using the enormous ocean of information – web, can be pleasurable as well as painful. Today it has been pleasurable. Keyword search opened up many avenues and multiple thought streams – one of them was indeed experiential and illuminating. Chandra Subramaniam’s website “http://movingmoon.com/node/24” is where he collects all his literary creations from formal poetry to little essays and stories. Like many others have done, he has also written commentary for KuraL, in his own style of a class of formal poetry known as “viruththap pA”. It is not complete only up to 29 chapters so far. No transiliteration can bring the beauty of reading it in the native language. I definitely encourage people to visit the site and read his works. (I feel so confident that the title of my blogsite “thamiz ini mella vaLarum” is an absolute truth).
Most of the keyword search on this topic leads to “stealing” in literary references. Though, both are basically taking away somebodys’ belongings either against their will or displeasure or completely unknown to them as to who took away their possessions. Covetting is done as an act of might, pettiness or slyness and behind the back operation to known people because of selfish needs and greed. Stealing is done mostly by those who don’t have, from people that have – not driven by the greed. So this chapter focuses more on greed driven coveting.

ஒருவருக்கு அவருடைய செல்வம் குன்றாது, குறுகாது இருக்கவேண்டுமானால், அவர் பிறருக்குரிய பொருளினை தன் பேராசையின் வழிசென்று கவர்ந்துகொள்ளாத குணநலம் உடையராதல் வேண்டும். இதுதான், இன்றைய குறள் சொல்லும் கருத்து.

பிறன் பொருள் கவருதல், பறித்தல் என்ற சொல்லின் அடிப்படையிலான தேடலில், இலக்கியங்கள் பெரும்பாலும் கள்ளாமை அதிகாரத்திலேயே கொண்டு சேர்க்கின்றன. கள்ளாமையும் பிறர்பொருள் கவராமைதான். பின்னால் வரப்போகும் கள்ளாமை அதிகாரத்துக்கும் வெஃகாமை அதிகாரத்தும் என்ன வேறுபாடு என்று சிந்தித்துக் கொண்டிருந்தேன். கவருதல், பறித்தல் ஒருவர் அறிய அவருக்கு உடைத்தான பொருளை பேராசையின்காரணமாக வலிந்து எடுத்துக்கொள்வதாகும். கள்ளன்மை அக்காரணமில்லாது, வறுமையினாலும், தனகில்லாமையினாலும்தான் பெரும்பாலும் நிகழ்வது; பெரும்பாலும் களவு கொடுத்தவர்களுக்கு யாரிடம் களவு கொடுத்தோம் என்றுகூட பலசமயங்களில் தெரியாது. பெரும்பாலும் களவு செய்பவர்களுக்கும் பேராசை ஒரு காரணமாக இராது.
