Transliteration:
paRRuga paRRaRRAn paRRinai appaRRaip
paRRuga paRRu viDaRku
paRRuga – Cling to or Hold on to or be attached to (to be devoid of attachments)
paRRaRRAn – One who is devoid of attachments (Godhead)
paRRinai – and be attached to him only
appaRRaip – even that attachment towards that Godhead devoid of attachments
paRRuga – one must hold or cling to or have
paRRu viDaRku – to keep as a guide to leave attachments in worldly lures.
In the fourth verse of first chapter on Invoking Gods, in ThirukkuraL, vaLLuvar would have called the omniscient as “vENDudhal vENDAmai ilAn”, describing his state as not having desires or aversions for anything. The same is denoted by one word “paRRaRRAn” in this verse. The only attachment one can have is the attachment on the ominscient who is free of attachments of desires or aversions. When a person clings to that attachment towards omniscient, then a persons’ attachments towards other worldly lures are set free and the person becomes detached.
A line from Thirumandhiram says, if you have to cling to any desire let it be the desire on omniscient. (paRRadhu paRRil paramanaip paRRumin). Sambandar thEvAram has many lines in different verses where he addresses Ishwara as “paRRAn”.
vaLLuvar has lost himself in the play of words in this verse. To express and emphasize detachment, he has used set all words starting with “paRRu” root, with lips touching (attached to each other) except the last word. Perhaps he has shown indirectly how painful the attachements become. The words, when said consequtively pose considerable difficulty because, for each word, the lips stick together and detach. In the new verse today, I have employed a straight forward technique of using words, where none of them allow the lips to join. The verse naturally suggests detachment, a different thought to show that detatchment need not be painful and difficult.
“Cling to the One who has attachments none, as an attachment
For that attachment is a must, to cling to attain detachment”
