கல்லார்ப் பிணிக்கும் கடுங்கோல் அதுவல்லது
இல்லை நிலக்குப் பொறை.

கல்லார்ப் – கல்லாத மூடரை
பிணிக்கும் – தமக்கு அணுக்கமாக ஆலோசனை வழங்கும் பணியிலே கொள்ளும்
கடுங்கோல் – கொடுங்கோலர்
அதுவல்லது – அதைப் போல் அல்லது
இல்லை – வேறு எதுவுமில்லை
நிலக்குப் – இப்பூமியின்
பொறை – பொறுமைக்கு எல்லை.
நிலமகளைப் போல் பொறுமைமிக்க தொன்றுமில்லை. ஏனெனில் அஞ்சத்தக்க வகையிலே ஆளுகின்ற கடுங்கோலரைத் தாங்குகின்றதல்லவா? அதுவும் கூட அதன் பொறுமைக்குப் பெருமை சேர்ப்பதல்ல. கல்லாத மூடரை தமக்கு அணுக்கமாக, தமக்கு ஆலோசனை வழங்க வைத்துகொள்ளும் கொடுங்கோலனைத் தாங்குவதவிட பொறுமையைச் சோதிப்பது ஏதேனும் உண்டா நிலமகளுக்கு? ஒரு நையாண்டிக் கேள்வியைக் குறளில் தொக்கவிட்டு, மூடரைத் துணைகொண்ட கொடுங்கோலனின் அஞ்சத்தக்க ஆட்சியை உணர்த்தி, அதன்மூலம் அத்தகு ஆட்சிகூடாது என்பதை அறிவுறுத்துகிறார்.
Transliteration:
kallArp piNikkum kaDungkOl aduvalladu
illai nilakkup poRai
kallArp – to have uneducated fools
piNikkum – as their advisory or ministers close to them
kaDungkOl – for a despotic ruler
aduvalladu – other than that
illai – there is none
nilakkup – for this earth
poRai – more testing its patience
There is none other than earth that is more patient as it bears all of us with our follies and atrocious things that we do to it. After all it bears despotic rulers across its vast landscape time and again. Even that’s not the limit of its patience. When such despotic rulers have unducated fools as their advisory, is there anything more to bear as testimony to earth’s patience.
vaLLuvar has probably employed a sarcastic tone to underline the fearful nature of such rule.
