செருவந்த போழ்திற் சிறைசெய்யா வேந்தன்
வெருவந்து வெய்து கெடும்.
(குறள் 569: வெருவந்த செய்யாமை அதிகாரம்)
செரு வந்த போழ்திற் – பகை வந்தபோதில்
சிறைசெய்யா – அது வருமென்று முன்பே அறிந்து அரண் செய்து கொள்ளாது
வேந்தன் – ஆள்பவன்
வெருவந்து – அச்சங்கொண்டு (அப்பகை தன் வாயிலில் வந்து சேரும் போது)
வெய்து – துன்புற்று
கெடும் – அழிந்துவிடும்.
பொச்சாவாமை அதிகாரத்தில் இதே போன்று மறதியின்மையின் தேவையை வலியுறுத்தி ஒரு குறள். “முன்னுறக் காவா திழுக்கியான் தன்பிழைபின்னூ றிரங்கி விடும்”. அக்குறளின் பொதுத்தன்மையும் இக்குறளைப் போன்றே உள்ளது. குற்றங்கடிதல் அதிகாரத்தில், “வருமுன்னர் காவாதான் வாழ்க்கை எரிமுன்னர் வைத்தூறுப் போலக் கெடும்” என்று பரவலாக அறியப்பட்ட ஒரு குறளும் இதேபோன்ற பொருளில்தான்.
போர் வருவதற்கு முன்பு தன்னைக் காத்துக்கொள்ள தனக்கு அரண் செய்து கொள்ளாது ஆள்பவன், அப்பகை வரும்போது அச்சங்கொண்டு துன்புற்று அழிந்துவிடும் என்பதே இக்குறளின் பொருள்.
“முற்பகல் செய்யின் பிற்பகல் விளையும்” என்ற முதுமொழி எல்லோரும் அறிந்ததுதான். இக்குறளும், பொச்சாவாமை, குற்றங்கடிதல் அதிகாரங்களில் சொல்லப்பட்டக் குறளும், “முற்பகல் செய்யாவிட்டால் பிற்பகல் விளயும்” என்ற பொருளில் சொல்லப்பட்டுள்ளன.
Transliteration:
Seru vanda pOzhdiR siRaiseyyA vEndan
veruvandu veydu keDum
Seruvanda pOzhdiR – when the enemies wage war against him
siRaiseyyA – not building a protecting fortress earlier to safeguard
vEndan – the ruler
veruvandu – will be fearful (when the enemies wage the war)
veydu – and suffer in the hands of enemies
keDum – to perish
Earlier we have seen two verses in the chapters of “Avodiing faults” and “Not being forgetful”, with similar meaning but in differen contexts. The general meaning in both cases was: “if not taking preventive action for some fault earlier, one would have to repent for that later”. This verse also expresses similarly.
“A ruler, who does not protect himself and his subjects, building a strong fortress for them, will have no option but to be fearful and suffer in the hands of his enemies. The essence of this verse is slightly different from previous verses. Apart from not doing what would be fearful to others, a ruler must not do anything that he would have to pay for, by being fearful.
A proverb in Tamil says, “The harm done earlier, will have its repurcussions later”. This verse and the two verse cited here probably indicate that this adage must be altered to say, “What is not done properly earlier, will have its repurcussions later”.
