58: (COMPASSIONATE GLANCE- கண்ணோட்டம்)
[After a whole chapter of not being fearful, vaLLuvar devotes a chapter on having a compassionate glance. The glance or gaze is typically an eyes function. Here the word “kaNNOTTam” implies a kindly, compassionate, benign glace by the ruler that is an essential attribute required of a ruler. Reasons and situations that a ruler is viewed despicable were written in the previous chapter; this chapter stresses on being compassionate and having a kindly look towards subjects for various reasons and situarions. It is just not the physical glance, look, but the compassionate outlook which is talked about in this chapter]

கண்ணோட்டம் என்னும் கழிபெருங் காரிகை
உண்மையான் உண்டிவ் வுலகு.

கண்ணோட்டம் என்னும் – அருட்பார்வை எனப்படும்
கழிபெருங் – மிக சிறந்த
காரிகை – திருமாது, நன்மை, அழகு இருக்கிறது (உலகில் சில ஆள்வோர்களிடம் இருப்பதால்)
உண்மையான் உண்டு – என்னும் மெய்யான நிலையால் வாழ்கிறது
இவ்வுலகு – இவ்வுலகம்
இவ்வதிகாரத்தின் முதற்குறள் அருட்பார்வை என்பதை உண்மையான பேரழகு என்றும், அப்பார்வை இவ்வுலகில் இருப்பதாலேயே இவ்வுலகம் வாழ்கிறது என்றும் கூறுகிறது. இவ்வுலகில் இருப்பதால் என்றது பொதுவாக எல்லோருக்குமாகி வந்தாலும், ஆளுவோரின் அருட்பார்வையாலே குடிகளுக்கு வாழ்வு என்பதால், அருட்கண்ணோட்டம் அவர்களுக்கே கட்டாயமாகத் தேவை என்பதையும் உணர்த்தும் குறள். காரிகை என்பது பெண்ணையும் குறிப்பதால், அதை செல்வத்துக்கு தெய்வமாம் திருமாதினைக் குறிப்பதாகவும் சொல்லலாம். திருவுள்ள இடத்தில்தான் அழகும் இருக்கும்.
Transliteration:
kaNNOTTam ennum kazhiperung kArigai
uNmaiyAn uNDiv vulagu
kaNNOTTam ennum – Compassionate glance
kazhiperung – such an exceedingly great
kArigai – beauty or goddess of wealth
uNmaiyAn – the truth that it lives in abundance
uNDiv vulagu – this world sustains.
In this very first verse of this chapter, vaLLuvar says compassionate glance is the true beauty. Because such compassionate glance (through the right rulers) live in this world, this world sustains. Since compassionate glance of the ruler makes the people live peacefully, it is best to construe that it is more specifically implied for a ruler here. The word “kArigai” implies “a woman”. Paridiyaar says that it means the goddess of wealth, which is also appropriate. Where the wealth is, beauty also stays.
