தன்னைத்தான் காதல னாயின் எனைத்தொன்றும்
துன்னற்க தீவினைப் பால்.
(குறள் 209: தீவினையச்சம் அதிகாரம்)
Transliteration:
ThannaiththAn kAdhalanAyin enaiththonRum
thunnaRka thIvinaip pAl
ThannaiththAn – A person on his soul
kAdhalanAyin – if, has attachment
enaiththu onRum – not even a little bit
thunnaRka – don’t do
thIvinaippAl – evil deeds towards others
If a person loves self, then he should not think or do, evil deeds. The connotation of self-love here is about the concern on soul that travels through several birth-death cycles, that it should not have sufferings in subsequent births.
When the thought that the soul of self should not suffer in subsequent births, then the self-love is exhibited. A person who does evil to others knows very well, it will come back to hurt him eventually, in multi fold. If there is an iota of self-love that his soul should not go through such pain, then, the person must avoid doing evil to others.
If self-love is in a person there must be not intent
Or deed of evil to others, even to the slightest extent

தன்னைத்தான் – ஒருவன் தன் ஆன்மாவின் மீது
காதலனாயின் – பற்றுடையவனாக இருந்தால்
எனைத்து ஒன்றும் – சிறிதளவுகூட
துன்னற்க – செய்யாதொழிக
தீவினைப்பால் – தீவினைகளைப் பிறருக்கு
ஒருவன் தன்னையே நேசிப்பவனாக இருந்தால், அவன் பிறருக்கு சிறிதளவுகூட தீவினைகளை நினைக்கவும், செய்யவும் கூடாது. தன்னையே நேசிப்பது, தன்மேலேயே பற்று கொண்டிருப்பது என்பது, தன்னுடைய, பிறவிகளைக் கடக்கும் ஆன்மாவின் மேல் கொண்டுள்ள அக்கறையைத்தான் குறிக்கிறது.
அவ்வான்மா பின்வரும் பிறவிதோறும் வருந்தக்கூடாது என்னும் எண்ணம் இருந்தால் என்பதயே “தன்னைத்தான் காதலனாயின்” என்கிறார் வள்ளுவர். தவிரவும், பிறர்க்கு துன்பந்தரும் தீவினைகளை நினைப்பவருக்கு, அதனால் முடிவிலே தனக்கே துன்பம் நேரும் என்று என்றறிந்து, அதனின்று தன்னை காத்துக்கொள்வதற்கு தன்மேலேயே பற்று இருந்தால்தான் அத்தீச்செயல்களைச் செய்யாதொழிவர். இதன் காரணம்பற்றியும் இவ்வாறு கூறியதாகக் கொள்ளலாம்.
