புறந்தூய்மை நீரான் அமையும் அகந்தூய்மை
வாய்மையால் காணப் படும்.
(குறள் 298: வாய்மை அதிகாரம்)
Transliteration:
puRanthUymai nIrAn amaiyum aganthUymai
vAymaiyAl kANap paDum
puRanthUymai – cleanliness of the body
nIrAn – by water
amaiyum – bestowed
aganthUymai – the cleanliness of the heart/mind/inner self
vAymaiyAl – by being truthful
kANappaDum – is seen.
A simple thought is expressed in this verse. Just like water cleanses a body, speaking truth makes the soul of a body clean. This verse does not offer much scope to expand and give a detailed commentary. Penitents need both forms of cleanliness and hence both forms of cleanliness have been mentioned here citing one as an example of the other.
“As the water cleanses the body external
Truthfulness cleanses the soul internal”
தமிழிலே:
புறந்தூய்மை – உடல் தூய்மையயாவது
நீரான் – குளிக்கின்ற நீரால்
அமையும் – பெறப்படும்
அகந்தூய்மை – உள்ளத் தூய்மையாவது
வாய்மையால் – வாய்மையால்
காணப்படும் – பெறப்படும்
மிகவும் எளிய கருத்தைச் சொல்லக்கூடிய குறள். உடலின் தூய்மை நீராலே அமைவதுபோல, ஒருவரின் உள்ளத்தூய்மை அவரது வாய்மையால்தான் காணப்படும். விரித்துச்சொல்ல வாய்ப்புத் தராத குறள். துறவறத்தில் உள்ளோர்க்கு இரண்டுவித தூய்மைகளும் வேண்டுமென்பதால் உடல் தூய்மை, அதற்குக் காரணமான நீராடல் இவற்றைக்கூறி, உள்ளத்தூய்மை அதற்குக் காரணமான வாய்மை இவற்றையும் கூறியுள்ளார், அதைப்போல இது என்னும்விதமாக.
