அற்றவர் என்பார் அவாஅற்றார் மற்றையார்
அற்றாக அற்றது இலர்.
(குறள் 365: அவாவறுத்தல் அதிகாரம்)
Transliteration:
aRRavar enbAr avAaRRAr maRRaiyAr
aRRAga aRRadhu ilar
aRRavar enbAr – those who will not have another birth
avA aRRAr – are those are free of earthly desires
maRRaiyAr– others who will not escape another birth (presumably misery ridden)
aRRAga – what they have to leave (the earthly desires)
aRRadhu ilar – have not forsaken them or severed them
Those who will not have another birth are the ones that have severed desires of this earthly pleasures and objects. Others, that will definitely have rebirth in this word full of miseries, have not quelled sucb desires.
Here is another verse that appears to be chapter filler. It is along the lines of a general statement such as “If this is there, that won’t be and if it is not, then that will be”. The very concept of rebirth as the result of desires in this wold as expressed throughout the chapter in general is different from what the Bible says.
Bible says, “Death is the wage for the sin”. Since desires are considered sin, the wage for that becomes death. Since there is no concept of rebirth for most other religions, the concept expressed in this chapter is not universal and hence the work of Thirukkural cannot be rightfully claimed as an Universal Code book on Ethics. It was a collection of expression of vaLLuvar’s times.

Others, to be born again have not, and kept their desires tied”
தமிழிலே:
அற்றவர் என்பார் – மறுபிறப்பென்பது இல்லாதவர்கள் என்பார்
அவா அற்றார் – உலகியல் ஆசைகளைத் துறந்தவர்கள், அறுத்தவர்கள்
மற்றையார் – மற்றவர்கள், அதாவது மறுபிறப்புடையோர் (துன்பம் நிறைந்ததென்று கொள்க!)
அற்றாக – எந்த ஆசைகளை விட்டுவிட வேண்டுமோ
அற்றது இலர் – அவற்றினை அறுத்தவர்கள் அல்லர்.
மீண்டும் பிறவி இல்லாதவர்கள் என்பவர்கள், இப்பிறப்பிலேயே உலகத்தின் ஆசைகளை துறந்தவர்கள், அறுத்தெறிந்தவர்கள். மற்றவர்கள், அதாவது நிச்சயமாக (துன்பச்சுழலாம்) மறுபிறப்புடையவர்கள் எந்த ஆசைகளை அற்று போகச் செய்யவேண்டுமோ அவற்றை அறுத்தவர்கள் அல்லர்.
மீண்டும் அதிகார நிரப்பியாக ஒரு குறள். இது இருந்தால் அது இருக்காது, இது இல்லாவிட்டால் அது இருக்கும் என்பது போன்ற ஒரு பொதுப்படையான கருத்தைச் சொல்லும் குறள். இவ்வதிகாரத்தின் ஒட்டுமொத்த கருத்தான ஆசைகளினால் வருவது துன்பங்கள் நிறைந்த உலகில் மறுபிறப்பு என்பது, விவிலியக்கூற்றுக்கு மாறானது.
பாவத்தின் சம்பளம் மரணம் என்பது விவிலிய வாக்கு. ஆசையென்பது பாவமாகவேக் கருதப்படுவதால், அதற்கான கூலி மரணமாகிறது. அங்கோ மறுபிறப்பே கிடையாது! உலகப்பொதுமறை என்பது இங்கே அடிபட்டுவிடுகிறது! ஒரு காலகட்டத்தின் கருத்தியலாகத் தான் கொள்ளவேண்டும்.
