இன்பம் இடையறா தீண்டும் அவாவென்னும்
துன்பத்துள் துன்பங் கெடின்.
(குறள் 369: அவாவறுத்தல் அதிகாரம்)
Transliteration:
Inbam iDaiyaRA dhInDum avAvennum
thunbaththuL thunbang keDin
Inbam – eartly pleasures apart from eventual heavenly abode
iDaiyaRA(dhu) – continuosuly
InDum – will be attained
avAvennum – if the desires
thunbaththuL thunbang – thare most miserable among miseries,
keDin – are severed.
Apart from the eventual place in heavenly abode, unceasing happiness in this world will be there! When? For who? When somebody loses the desires, the most miserable of miseries! Parimelazhagar says the miserable of miseries is something which will make other miseries feel even like happiness and such is the intensity of misery that befalls because of desires.
Parimelazhagar also interprets the “incessant happiness” as going to heavens with the human body as it is mentioned for Kannagi in silappadikAram. The expression “thunabaththuL thunbam” is common way of expressing even in everyday usage, AraneRichAram, says such misery will be there for people who do not know how to pursue ascetic life and attain happiness there (“thunabaththuL thunbam uzhappar thurandheidhum inbathilyal aRiyAdhavar”).

இன்பம் – இன்பமாகிய முத்தி மட்டுமின்றி உலகியல் இன்பங்களும்
இடையறாது – தொடர்ந்து
ஈண்டும் – கூடும்
அவாவென்னும்
– ஆசையென்னும்
துன்பத்துள் துன்பங் – மற்ற துன்பங்களை இன்பமாகக் காட்டக்கூடிய துன்பம்
கெடின் – தொலையுமானால்
ஒருவர்க்கு பிறப்புக்குப்பின் வரும் முத்தியைத் தவிர இவ்வுலக இன்பங்களும் இடையறமால் வரும்! எப்போது? ஆசையென்னும் துன்பங்களிலெல்லாம் கொடுந்துன்பமானது தொலையும்போது. இதுவே இக்குறள் சொல்லுவது. துன்பங்களுக்குள் துன்பம் என்பதை, மற்றதுன்பங்களை இன்பமாக உணரச்செய்யக்கூடிய அளவுக்கு கொடிய துன்பம் என்பார் பரிமேலழகர்.
துன்பத்துள் துன்பம் என்பதை அறநெறிச்சாரப் பாடலொன்றும் இவ்வாறூ சொல்கிறது.
“துன்பத்துள் துன்பம் உழப்பர் துறந்தெய்தும் இன்பத்தியல்பறியாதவர்”. பரிமேலழகர் அவா அறுத்தார் வீட்டின்பம் (முத்தி) தம் உடம்பொடு நின்றே எய்துவர் என்பார்.

வேண்டலெனும் துன்பம் தொலைந்திட இன்பமே
மீண்டும் இடையறா மல்
