செவிகைப்பச் சொற்பொறுக்கும் பண்புடை வேந்தன்
கவிகைக்கீழ்த் தங்கு முலகு.
(குறள் 389: இறைமாட்சி அதிகாரம்)
Transliteration:
Sevikaippach choRpoRukkum paNbuDai vEndhan
kavigaikkIzth thangu mulagu
Sevikaippach – for the ears to feel bitter
choRpoRukkum – tolerating the harsh words spoken by others
paNbuDai vEndhan – a honorable king (or the ruler)
kavigaikkIzth – under such a king’s protective umbrella of rule
thangu mulagu – will want to reside the citizens (the world)
Hearing the bitter and harsh words spoken against them, when a ruler is able to bear them and be equanimous, the citizens (world) would desire to stay under his protective umbrella. When somebody has the forgiving or even better ignoring tendency towards those that abuse them, the person must be extremely cultured more than just tolerant. If a ruler has such mindset, why would not, then citizens want to live under such a great ruler?
It is difficult to accept the thought expressed here. A ruler should also be able to punish appropriately people that are blasphemous and would be seen spineless by enemies if such an absolutely angelic posture is adopted. Though there is a saying that patience would win the world, looking back the pages of history, once incharge of ruling a nation, tolerating crime of blasphemy beyond a point would be construed as weakness.

செவிகைப்பச் – காதுகளுக்கே கசக்கும் படியாக
சொற்பொறுக்கும் – கடுஞ்சொற்களைப் (பிறரின் அவதூறு) பொறுக்கின்ற
பண்புடை வேந்தன்
– குணமிக்க ஆள்பவர்களின்
கவிகைக்கீழ்த் – வெண்கொற்றக் குடையாம் நிழலில்
தங்கு முலகு – இவ்வுலகே தங்க விழையும்
தன்னுடைய செவிகளுக்கே கசப்பாக உணரக்கூடிய, கடுஞ்சொற்களை பிறர் பேசுகிறபோதும் பொறுத்துக்கொள்ளும் ஆட்சியாளரின் வெண்கொற்றக்குடைகீழ் இவ்வுலகே தங்கிவிட விழையும். தம்மைக்குற்றம் கூறுபவர்களுக்கும் அருளும் நற்பண்புகளைக்கொண்ட ஆட்சியாளர்கள் நிச்சயமாகப் பண்பின் சிகரமாகத்தான் இருப்பார்கள். அத்தகைய ஆட்சியாளர்களை அண்டி வாழ குடிமக்கள் விரும்புவதில் ஒரு வியப்பும் இல்லை.
இக்குறளின் கருத்தை முற்றிலுமாக ஒப்புக்கொள்வது கடினம். குற்றங்கடிவதும் ஆள்பவருக்கு தேவையாதலால், பொறுமையின் சிகரமாக இருந்தால், ஆள்பவரை முதுகெலும்பு இல்லாதார் என்றும் பகைவர்கள் எண்ணக்கூடும். “பொறுத்தார் பூமி ஆள்வார்” என்ற வழக்கு இக்குறளில் வந்ததா என்று சிந்திக்கவேண்டும்! சரித்திர நிகழ்ச்சிகள் பல இவ்வாசகத்தை நினைவூட்டினாலும், ஆளவந்த பிறகு எல்லாவற்றுக்கும் பொறுமை ஏற்புடையதாகாது.
