40: (Education – கல்வி)
[Parimelazhagar says that this chapter comes after “merits of the ruler” because it emphasizes the education of the king, which is unacceptable in today’s context. In this day and age, education is meant for everyone. Reading through the verses, there is no direct reference that this chapter is meant for rulers only. Nor is there any reference that education is not meant for others. However, being erdudite, a ruler will benefit all his citizens.]

கற்க கசடறக் கற்பவை கற்றபின்
நிற்க வதற்குத் தக
(குறள் 391: கல்வி அதிகாரம்)
Transliteration:
kaRka kasaDaRak kaRpavai kaRRapin
niRka vadharkkuth thaga
kaRka – Learn
kasaDaRak – without any learning faults, only the substance discarding dirt
kaRpavai – whatever has to be learned
kaRRapin – after finishing the learning
niRka – stand by
adharkkuth thaga – the education which has daught ethical skills
Again a verse known to most who have heard of ThirukkuraL. Every life that comes to earth keeps on learning something new every living second, from the time it is born till its death. But, the skills of life, ethics and discipline required for life are to be learned from a qualified teacher. Even such learning must be learned without any faults. When a person is done with learning, must follow the ethics and discipline without fail and as learned.
aRaneRich chAram says the same, in the lines “kaRRalum kaRRavai kETTalum kETTadhan kaN niRRalum kUDap peRin”.
“Learn, without blemishes; when finished learning
With all that is there to learan Live by the learning
தமிழிலே:
கற்க – கல்வியைக் கற்றுக்கொள்க
கசடறக் – கசடு அற – அதையும் குற்றங்களைந்து கற்றுக்கொள்க
கற்பவை – அவ்வாறு கற்கவேண்டிய அனைத்தும்
கற்றபின் – கற்று முடிந்த பின்னர்
நிற்க – ஒழுகுக
அதற்குத் தக – கற்றகேள்விக்கு தகுந்தாற்போல்
திருக்குறள் அறிந்த அனைவரும் அறிந்த ஒரு குறள். பிறப்பு முதல் இறப்பு வரை எல்லா வாழும் உயிர்களும் ஒவ்வொரு நொடியும் புதுப்புது செய்திகளைக் கற்றுக்கொண்டே இருக்கின்றன. ஆனாலும் வாழ்க்கையில் உய்வதற்கான நெறிகளையும், ஒழுக்கங்களையும் ஒவ்வொருவரும் தகுந்த நேரத்தில், தகுந்த ஆசிரியரிடம் பயிலுதல் வேண்டும். அவ்வாறு கற்பதையும் எவ்வித குற்றமுமில்லாத வழியில் கற்கவேண்டும். கற்கவேண்டியவற்றைக் கற்றுமுடிந்தபின்னர், தாம் கற்ற ஒழுக்க, அறநெறி வழிகளிலே ஒவ்வொருவரும் ஒழுக வேண்டும். என்பதே இக்குறள் சொல்லும் கருத்து. கசடற என்பது, தேவையற்ற ஐயங்களை நீக்கி, மெய்பொருளை அறிதல் என்பதாம்.
நாலடியார் பாடலொன்று, கற்றலின் சிறப்பை இவ்வாறு கூறுகிறது.
“கல்வி கரையில கற்பவர் நாள் சில
மெல்ல நினைப்பிற் பிணிபல – தெள்ளிதின்
ஆராய்ந் தமைவுடைய கற்பவே நீரொழியப்
பாலூண் குருகிற் றெரிந்து”
அறநெறிச் சாரப்பாடல் கற்றலின் பெருமையை இவ்வாறு கூறுகிறது.
“எப்பிறப் பாயினும் ஏமாப் பொருவதற்கு
மக்கட் பிறப்பில் பிறிதில்லை – அப்பிறப்பில்
கற்றலும் கற்றவை கேட்டலும் கேட்டதன்கண்
நிற்றலும் கூடப் பெறின்”
