சூழ்வார்கண் ணாக ஒழுகலான் மன்னவன்
சூழ்வாரை சூழ்ந்து கொளல்.
(குறள் 445: பெரியோரைத் துணைக்கோடல் அதிகாரம்)
Transliteration:
sUzhvArkaN Naga ozhugalAn mannavan
sUzvAraich sUzhndhuk koLal
sUzhvAr – One who surrounds a ruler (the learned ministers)
kaNNaga – as the eyes of
ozhugalAn – function and guide
mannavan – the ruler
sUzvAraich – the Rule must select the right people to surround him
sUzhndhuk koLal – and have them close circle of guiding light for his rule
Most of us are, mostly guided by the eyes of people around us. Our thoughts stem, shape and travel as guided by such close-knit group of people around us. Sometimes, our trust is so blind that we don’t even think if the guidance is prudent enough for larger good.
Though the people that wish us well will most likely guide us in the right path, for a ruler, the choice must be the people of erudition, ethics and experience, that will only guide us in the right path. Hence for a ruler, the primarly duty is not to have people that please or pamper or fanning self, but think on behalf of the citizens at large and do the appropriate for the ruled. Hence a ruler must surround himself with such scholarly elders.

தமிழிலே:
சூழ்வார் – தலைமைப் பொறுப்பில் உள்ளோரைச் சுற்றி அவருக்கு அணுக்கமானவர்கள்
கண்ணாக – அவர்களுக்கு பார்வையாக இருந்து
ஒழுகலான் – செயல்படுவதால், வழி நடத்துவதால்
மன்னவன் – ஆள்வோர்
சூழ்வாரை – அறிவிலும், ஆற்றலிலும் ஆழ்ந்த அனுபவத்தில் முதிர்ந்த பெரியோரையே
சூழ்ந்து கொளல் – தம்மைச் சுற்றிக் தமக்குத் துணையாகக் கொள்ளவேண்டும்
நம்மைச் சுற்றியுள்ளவர்கள் பார்வையில் நமது எண்ணங்கள் பெரும்பாலும் கருவாகின்றன, உருவாகின்றன, பயணிக்கின்றன. அதுவும் நமக்கு அணுக்கமானவர்கள் என்று நாம் கொள்பவர்கள் கண்ணோட்டத்தையே பெரும்பாலும் கண்மூடித்தனமாக கொள்வது வாழ்வில் இயல்பான ஒன்றுதான்.
நமக்கு நன்மையினைக் கோருபவர்கள் நம்மை நல்லவிதமாகவே நடத்துபவர்கள் ஆயினும், அறிவிலும், அறத்திலும், அனுபவத்திலும் முதிர்ந்தோர், ஆராய்ந்தே நம்மை வழிநடத்துவார்கள். ஆள்வோருக்க்கு, இதனால் தம்மைச் சுற்றியுள்ளவர்களை தேர்ந்தெடுக்கும் பொறுப்பு மிகவும் இன்றியமையாதது.
மனதுக்கு உகந்தவர்களை விட, தாம் ஆட்சி செய்யும் மக்களுக்கு உகந்தவற்றைச் செய்பவர்கள், தம்மை செம்மையாக ஆட்சி செய்ய வழி நடத்துபவர்கள் என்று அறிவில் சிறந்த பெரியோரைத் தம்மைச் சூழ்ந்திருப்பவர்களாக ஆள்வோர் கொள்ளவேண்டும்.
