உடைத்தம் வலியறியார் ஊக்கத்தின் ஊக்கி
இடைக்கண் முரிந்தார் பலர்.

uDaiththam valiyaRiyAr Ukkaththin Ukki
iDaikkaN murindhAr palar
uDaith tham – Capabilies of self
valiyaRiyAr – not aware of (their own) strengths
Ukkaththin – (unwarranted ) enthusiasm
Ukki – Driven by (enthusiasm)
iDaikkaN – In the middle of undertaken task
murindhAr – failed, (without the abiiity to complete)
palar – many such people (that failed)
This verse points to people that miserably fail in what they venture, without understanding their own abilities to handle them successfully and cautions others. Before venturing into something, one must self evaluate if there are requisite abilities in self. Those who do not know what their real abilities are, and indulge in something driven by unnecessary enthusiasm, will fail in the middle. Using this word of caution vaLLuvar stresses the importance of knowing self-strength before ventuing. More than the abilities, a person must understand his lack of abilities and strengths to do things.

தமிழிலே:
உடைத்தம் – தம்மிடம் இருக்கின்ற
வலியறியார் – வலிமையை அல்லது குறைவுபட இருப்பதை அறிந்திரார்
ஊக்கத்தின் – தேவையில்லாத வேகத்தில்
ஊக்கி – உந்தப்பட்டு
இடைக்கண் – செய்யத் தொடங்கிய ஒரு செயலின் பாதியிலேயே
முரிந்தார் – அதை முடிக்கமுடியாமல் தோற்றவர்
பலர் – பலர் உள்ளனர்.
இக்குறள் தம்முடைய ஆற்றலை அறிந்துகொள்ளாமல் செயலில் இறங்கித் தோற்றவர்களைச் சுட்டி எல்லோரையும் அறிவுறுத்துகிறது, எச்சரிக்கையைச் செய்கிறது. ஒரு செயலில் இறங்குவதற்கு முன்னால், அச்செயலைச் செய்து முடிக்கும் ஆற்றல் தம்மிடம் உள்ளதா என்று ஆராய்ந்து அறிந்து கொள்ளவேண்டும். அவ்வாறு அறியாதவர், ஒரு ஆர்வத்தால் (ஆர்வக்கோளாறு) உந்தப்பட்டு, அச்செயலைச் செய்யப் புகுந்தால், அதில் இடையிலேயே தோல்வியுற்று போனவர்கள் எத்துணையோ பேர். இவர்களெல்லாம் செயலாற்ற நமக்கு நமது வலிமை அல்லது இன்மையின் அறிவு எவ்வளவு தேவை என்பதை எப்போதும் உணர்த்துபவர்கள்.
