சிறுபடையான் செல்லிடம் சேரின் உறுபடையான்
ஊக்கம் அழிந்து விடும்.

Transliteration:
siRupaDaiyAn selliDam sErin uRupaDaiyAn
Ukkam azhindhu viDum
siRupaDaiyAn – Thinking it is only a small army
selliDam sErin – going to the war with it in a place where it is advantageous to them
uRupaDaiyAn – a king with even a big army
Ukkam – their pride
azhindhuviDum – will lose the war and diminish in pride
Underestimating the enemy’s strength based on his armys’ size is dangerous. Sheer size alone does not guarantee victory. Operative place of the enemy army, and their stealth are important strategic assessments to make. Not knowing them, a king wilh despite a big army can lose to a small army and lose their pride.
A similar thought has been expressed by vaLLuvar in chapter of “Pride of Army”, though not in the context of “place”. Even big in numbers an army like mice will be decimated, if the small army operates like a snake – verse stressing the tactical aspect as opposed to strategic aspect covered in the current verse.

If it is smaller army’s operative place of power and stealth”

சிறுபடையான் – சிறுபடைதானே என்று
செல்லிடம் சேரின் – அப்படை செயலாற்றல் மிகுந்த இடத்திலே
உறுபடையான் – பெரிய படையுடைய வேந்தரும்
ஊக்கம் – தம் பெருமை
அழிந்துவிடும் – குன்றி வெட்கும்படியாக தோல்வியுறுவர்.
பகைப்படையின் எண்ணிக்கையை மட்டும் கணக்கில் கொண்டு, அதன் வலிமையறியாமல், அது இயங்கும் இடத்தின் பொறிகளை அறியாமல் ஒரு பெரிய படை சண்டையிடச் செல்லுமானால், அது தன் பெருமை குன்றி அழிந்துபடும். பெரும்படையினை உடைத்திருந்த பெரும் வேந்தர்கள் எல்லாம் சிறுபடைகளிடன் ஆடுகளம் தெரியாமல் மோதி சிறுமையடைந்த கதைகள் சரித்திரத்தின் பக்கங்களில் ஏராளம்.
இதேபோன்ற ஒரு கருத்தை “படை மாட்சி” அதிகாரத்தில் வரும் குறள், “ஒலித்தக்கால் என்னாம் உவரி எலிப்பகை நாகம் உயிர்ப்பக் கெடும்”. பெரும்படையாக வந்தாலும்,எலிக்கூட்டம்போல இருந்தால், அதுவும், சிறுபடை பாம்பாக இருந்து சீறினாலே சிதறி ஓடும். இடம் என்பது சிந்திக்கும் முறையையும் படைமாட்சியின் குறள் செயலாற்றுவதையும் கூறுகின்றன. சிறுபடை, பெரும்படை மேற்கோள்களைக் கொண்டு.
